# Torphins: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then put this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Torphins, catching it before your engine turns usually leaves a drain and a thorough flush where it stands.

Here before the event? In that case what follows explains how it comes about and how to stop it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels on the roads about Torphins and Stothill Croft carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place the two side by side behind one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Torphins: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a drive off Beltie Road, or on the way home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: a strange motor.

Third, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and after the pour begins, nothing stops it.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in Mid Beltie or bang in the centre of Torphins.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Tillydrine or a forecourt in Torphins, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at the nearest station? Ask the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, wherever around Aberdeenshire, use this routine.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and never rushed beside Craigour Road at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it is closed before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Skip step five entirely.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Torphins?

Brief list, then. Top of that: your engine remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at Shell, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will usually help to push your car away when asked.

Your own driveway around Torphins is where it stays.

Already started? Pull over when it is sensible, then switch off.

The next exit is the place to come off if you're on the M90, over 50 miles from Torphins.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Aberdeen, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Torphins.

## Our arrival in Torphins, and what takes place next

Our van reaches the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Queen Victoria Diamond Jubilee Fountain, or outside the local primary school.

What liquid got in, the amount, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the replies decide the work and price.

The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Once your filter is cleaned — or renewed, where required — clean diesel goes in, and finally the car gets tested.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Unstarted cars mostly need a half-hour job after arrival. The kit is fine on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — so use the wait to look at yours.

Assuming won't help behind Platform 22 Studio & Gallery, on a boundary, or somewhere awkward to describe; ring and check.
