# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Torr Top: Why It Occurs and How to Stop It

Pause reading a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Torr Top.

The remainder of this page explains why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels in High Lee, like those in Torr Top, carry on two fluids; the engine takes only the diesel.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of cars have a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in the gap that the mistake happens.

## Torr Top: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Midland Terrace, or at Pride of The Peaks on the way home that evening.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and after the tip begins, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Torr Top or out in New Mills.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Newtown or a forecourt in Torr Top, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler is not by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at New Mills Central.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever it is in Derbyshire — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Dale Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then check once more — confirm your diesel cap stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Skip step five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Torr Top already?

Short list, then. Top of that: the engine remains unstarted.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it's the New Mills Marina Diesel Pump or the Carlton, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump.

If you are on your own driveway around Torr Top, leave the vehicle where it is.

Already run? Pull over when it is sensible, then turn off.

## Torr Top: what takes place when our technicians get there

By St Mary's Catholic Voluntary Academy, near Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our technicians come to it.

Those replies decide this work and the price, and so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

That quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Unstarted vehicles usually need a half-hour visit after arrival. The kit is safe on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street late at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.
