# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tottenham Hale: Why It Happens

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where your car sits in Tottenham Hale, is normally what it needs when caught before your engine runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it occurs and how to ensure it does not — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Not one liquid but two: that's what plenty of modern diesels near Tottenham Hale and Northumberland Park carry, with diesel feeding your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Tottenham Hale: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Park View Road before work, or in the car park at The Volunteer on the way home.

New-to-you vehicles are next, too. Hire cars, new cars and company cars put their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Tottenham Hale or out in Tottenham.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Tottenham Hale forecourt or a drive over in Craven Walk, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything is poured in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside your diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, not once the light goes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever around Greater London, use this routine.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Monument Way.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've found the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the vehicle, shut the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Tottenham Hale?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Filling up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — Shell, Esso or any other — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle away, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Tottenham Hale.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

## Tottenham Hale: what happens when our engineers arrive

The van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside Asda Living, or by Welbourne Primary School.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it has run, since the answers determine the work and the price.

You get that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Once the filter is flushed — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally the vehicle is tested.

After that our engineers start the engine and confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need about half an hour after our engineers arrive.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents your insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
