# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Totton

Pause here for a moment if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Around Totton, finding it before your motor turns normally means draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it takes place and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of current diesels on the roads around Totton and Testwood carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Other vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both side by side under one flap.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is filled far less frequently, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Totton

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens in a rush, before work on a driveway off Library Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Keys.

Unfamiliar vehicles are next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing stops it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Totton or out in Brokenford.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these first, at a forecourt around Totton or a driveway over in Redbridge. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- On plenty of motors, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at the nearest station? Check with the person who drove the car last before leaving, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Hampshire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Ringwood Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap was never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Step five is out.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Totton?

The short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car clear of the pump if you are at a forecourt — the Esso, the Shell or somewhere else.

Your own drive in Totton is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the Nursling Spur Motorway, under a mile from Totton, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Totton is a smaller job than a run towards Southampton, under 5 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Totton: what happens when our engineers arrive

Outside Lydlynch Infant School, near Totton Christian Centre or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those replies decide the work and price.

The quote comes over the phone, before any van leaves.

Then the tank is drained and the system flushed thoroughly.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it counts more.

Testing comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

After that our technicians start the car and check it runs smoothly before we go.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we get there, provided your engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Being a coastal town, Totton has the same vans as surrounding places — Eling, Rushington — right through SO postcodes and the wider area around them.

Fastest of all: give a SO40 3 postcode to the van.

Moving the car isn't needed.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Testvale Park, a side street near Totton Library: we drain the vehicle where it is.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Three Score Club? Close to a county line? Asking is better than assuming, and so ring.
