# Tow Law: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where the vehicle sits around Tow Law, is normally what it takes if caught before your motor runs.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the motor — yet many newer diesels seen around Tow Law and Sunniside hold another fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the layout on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank take place around Tow Law?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and running out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Castle Bank, perhaps at The Newmarket on the way home after work.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's a second thing: a strange motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Inkerman or the heart of Tow Law: it is the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Tow Law forecourt or a driveway over in Craigside, spend a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Position misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it beside the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Bishop Auckland? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — wherever it is in Durham — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Dan's Castle, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and look a second time that your diesel cap never came off.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Tow Law?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — Helme Park Service Station, Shell or any other — the attendants will usually help roll the vehicle away, if you ask.

Your own driveway around Tow Law is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

Tow Law sits under 15 miles from the A1(M); there, use the first exit.

## What occurs when we get there in Tow Law

Wherever the car came to rest, whether by Blessed John Duckett Catholic Primary School, Tow Law, near St. Joseph or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

We ask what went in, about how much, and whether it has run, since those replies determine the work and the quote.

Nobody sets off before you've heard our price over the phone.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of the car.

The engine is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs smoothly, all before our engineers head off.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your motor has not run need about half an hour after our technicians are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
