# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Town Centre

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the engine off — and the ignition too.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts when your pump begins pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Town Centre, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the engine has been run.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Town Centre: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can switch anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Our van finds you quickest with a postcode starting TF3 4, or just the name of a street close by, and so phone from the car.

Don't:

- Shifting the car even a short way is no reason to fire up your engine.

- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to run your fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way along Ironmasters Way.

- By the road, don't try emptying it yourself.

At a forecourt in Town Centre, whether it's the Sainsbury's or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the pump.

At home, the car remains exactly where it was left.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the fumes.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

It doesn't combine. Once it's poured into the tank, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that is just where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

When the system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it sits beneath the diesel, and that is how a car topped up in Malinslee yesterday and not started remains the straightforward one, provided nobody turns your key.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking any part it reaches until it's cleared completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean harm by morning for a vehicle parked around Town Centre. Only inside your tank, it stays stable.

Then there's the water: it brings no protection to the components that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Asda and you have a problem of thin fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside that tank it causes no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

It doesn't burn, and so it can't just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the car is in Ketley Bank or the middle of Town Centre.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Emptying a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere across Shropshire your vehicle has stopped.

## Town Centre: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Many cars have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

It mostly happens outside the house, from a container bought on the journey home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Hollinswood Primary School the top-up is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Grange Central.

Otherwise, in dim light outside The Thomas Botfield, your car gets refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

The least familiar vehicles see it most — rentals, new ones, company ones, and the spare motor in a family with both fuels.

Wherever you're in Town Centre or the rest of Shropshire, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Town Centre: started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

It has been sucked through the filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, lost power, warnings on your dash, or a cut-out — returning from Phoenix House, perhaps, or midway across Town Centre.

No starting it again to check: stop when safe, then turn it off.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Town Centre sits under a mile from the M54; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than driving on.

Hopping across Town Centre to the car park by Capgemini sign is one thing; heading for Wolverhampton, under 15 miles away, is something else, since every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the motor has been run, the flush includes more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

Long-term damage is very rare if it's caught early.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel in Town Centre: what it takes

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a road near Reassure History Sign, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt in Town Centre, and the van travels to it.

Three answers decide the work, so before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly the amount, plus if your motor has run.

Then the tank is cleared where the vehicle stands, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

The system is rinsed thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

Testing your car comes last, after clean diesel goes in and the filter is flushed or, where needed, replaced.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, if the engine has not run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live forecourt is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the final step.

Whether it is a parking space outside Telford Central or a driveway in Town Centre, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off.

It's checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs smoothly before our technicians leave.

No garage is required at any point, with the entire job done then and there.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report after that, which is what insurers ask for.

## About Town Centre, for a moment

Town Centre is a suburban area in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 155 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Town Centre lies approximately 14.6 miles from Wolverhampton and is close to other nearby places such as Telford, Hollinswood, and Snedshill. Town Centre has a population of around 2393 residents, and its location in the West Midlands region puts it about 127.3 miles from London. Town Centre forms a local hub with a range of amenities and services for the surrounding community.

## Town Centre and Shropshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue jobs in Town Centre go to vans that serve the places around it — Telford, Hollinswood plus Snedshill — and much of Shropshire further out, throughout TF postcodes.

Close to a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down? Asking beats assuming, so ring.

Town Centre is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Town Centre: the cost of fixing it

There's no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same.

Three things shift the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one rests on whether our van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is simpler than a tight gap behind Telford Shopping Centre.

Which fluid went in, how much, plus whether the engine ran: each Town Centre call opens by asking precisely those, before a quote, never afterwards.

Those answers turn a range into a straight quote.

Our quote is given during the call, before a van leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Still alongside your car in Town Centre?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us it's AdBlue, about how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Town Centre or anywhere in Shropshire.
