# Town End: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done just where your car stands in Town End, is normally all it takes if found before the engine runs.

The remainder of this page covers why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel feeds your motor — but plenty of modern diesels seen around Town End and Badgeney carry a second fluid too.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean them, from a separate tank.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both together under one flap.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Town End

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Hurry comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Wimblington Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Seven Stars.

New-to-you motors are second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company cars place their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Knights End or bang in the heart of Town End.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Town End forecourt or a driveway out in Eastwood End, spend a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel filler? Then check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — at March's car park, perhaps — not once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever in Cambridgeshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Rectory Drive.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel side stays shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Stop once that tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through its built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, then look again — making sure your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five stays out.

## Town End: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting your engine.

Leave your ignition off too, because on many diesels it by itself runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Gulf or the Jet, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own driveway around Town End, leave the car where it sits.

Already started? Stop when it's sensible, then switch off.

The next exit means the place to come off if you're on the A1(M), under 25 miles from Town End.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Ely, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Town End.

## Town End: what takes place when our technicians arrive

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, be it by Cavalry Primary School, beside St Wendreda's or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — which fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

No one sets off before you have heard our price over the phone.

After that: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Then our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run need about half an hour after we are there.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains round Town End, and Cambridgeshire beyond

As a residential suburb, Town End shares its vans nearby areas — March, Little London — all the way through PE postcodes and the wider area around them.

A postcode starting PE15 9 gets our van to you fastest.

There's no need to shift the car.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Stone Cross, a lay-by on the way to The Avenue Sports Club Ground, a drive.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Trinity Church? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, and so phone.

## Town End drivers: the short version

First, the cap; then, the pour.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere in Cambridgeshire.
