# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Town End

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, keep the ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Town End, finding it before the engine turns normally leaves draining and a full flush where it stands.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your engine — but many modern diesels seen round Town End and Morley hold a second fluid as well.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

There's a filler for each tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur around Town End?

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Commercial Street, perhaps at The Picture House on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar cars come next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

No part stops the tip after it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Low Town End or the heart of Town End: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Whether a Town End forecourt or a driveway out in New Brighton, take a couple of seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check when you collect a rental or company car — at Morley's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light comes on, anywhere in West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never hurried on the side of Peel Street.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Town End?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things starts.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Morrisons, Shell or another — the attendants will usually help roll your car away, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Town End.

Already started? Pull over once it's safe, then turn off.

Town End sits under a mile from the M621; there, take the first junction.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Leeds, under 5 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Town End.

## Town End: what happens when our technicians arrive

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Seven Hills Primary School, near Salvation Army or on your own driveway.

Which liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since the answers set the work and quote.

That price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

The fuel system is then cleaned thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. Hence it counts more.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of the vehicle.

Then we fire it up and confirm it runs properly before leaving.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we arrive, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt yet quiet after dark beside a house.

Nothing in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
