# Town End: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down a moment, keep your ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor has not turned, it's emptied and fully purged where the vehicle sits around Town End.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your engine — but plenty of current diesels seen round Town End and Shepherd Hill carry another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Town End?

It is rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a drive off Cromwell Place, or on the way home in the car park outside The Commercial.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on.

It takes a few seconds, whether out in Paleside or right in the heart of Town End.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Whether a Town End forecourt or a drive out in Ossett Street Side, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside the diesel inlet? In that case check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say where.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you collect a hire car or fleet car — at Dewsbury's car park, perhaps — rather than once the light appears.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

For the day the warning appears — anywhere you are in West Yorkshire — a simple routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Albion Croft.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you've found the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went in the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Town End: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. First: the motor remains unstarted.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

On a forecourt — Esso, Murco or another — the staff will normally help push the car clear, when you ask.

Your own drive around Town End is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

Leave the M1 — under a mile out of Town End — at the next exit.

Mileage matters — a quick hop across Town End is a smaller job than driving under 5 miles to Wakefield — so say roughly how far it went.

## Town End: what takes place when our engineers arrive

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Ossett Holy Trinity CofE VA Primary School, near Trinity Church or on your own driveway.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, because those replies determine this work and the quote.

On the phone call itself, you hear our price — before dispatch.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Before we go, we start the car and check that it's running smoothly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor hasn't run take about half an hour after we arrive.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.
