# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Town Head? Keep It Switched Off

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has got into your diesel tank.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and nothing happens till your engine sucks it through.

Caught before your motor has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Town Head.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Town Head

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you're at all close to moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the fluid and the amount, and so do not bin it away.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting DL14 7, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to move the car.

- Turning the key to ignition alone starts your pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short way along West Road.

- No emptying it yourself, either, on the verge.

At a forecourt in Town Head, whether it's the Morrisons or another one, ask the staff to help you roll your car away from the petrol pump.

On the drive, your car remains exactly as it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It doesn't combine. After it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

It drops, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its fuel from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Escomb overnight and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of that tank, untouched — though it will be first through if your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the components it gets to for as long as it stays there.

A car left standing in Town Head with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the Spoors Limited and you have an issue of thin fuel.

No damage comes while it sits unused, blended into the diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is simply the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it can't just be run through.

Whether your vehicle sits in South Church or the centre of Town Head, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, and so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across Durham the vehicle is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Town Head

Many cars put the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. Nobody intends it.

A bottle bought when driving home and poured in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the typical story.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

The top-up is hurried outside Etherley Lane Primary School, because the dash flashed with a warning while the kids were dropped in.

Someone pours the container in at home, just off Newton Cap Bank, as the day ends.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap tops up your car in dim light, parked in the car park by The Bay Horse.

Hired motors, new cars, fleet motors, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it the most.

Wherever you're in Town Head or the remainder of Durham, it is the same mistake and the same first answer: leave the vehicle off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Town Head?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

The fuel filter and lines have had it pulled through, and any running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Perhaps returning from West Mills Playing Fields, or midway across Town Head, your engine might go lumpy, smoke, lose power, flash your dash or stall.

Pull over when it is safe. Switch off. Keep the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Town Head lies under 10 miles from the A1(M); if you were on it, exit by the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Mileage counts: each mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system, and so heading for Durham, under 10 miles away, makes a far bigger job than hopping across Town Head to the car park by St. Wilfrid.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the car has come to a stop.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it is spotted soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Town Head?

Our technicians come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Town Head: a side street close to Gibbon Street Christian Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run, because those answers decide this work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when the tank is drained, on the spot.

A full flush counts much more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what remains will not wash away on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the car is tested.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians arrive.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The last step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel.

Whether it's a parking space by Bishop Auckland or a driveway in Town Head, that is where our engineers start the car and you head off.

Before we leave, our technicians make sure it is running correctly with new diesel in.

No workshop is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

## AdBlue drains across Durham, Town Head included

Our teams that answer AdBlue jobs around Town Head also cover the places around it, Bishop Auckland, Toronto and Etherley Dene among them, and most of Durham beyond, across the DL postcode area.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere awkward to explain? Checking beats assuming, and so phone.

Town Head is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Town Head: the cost of fixing it

Because each callouts differ, a flat price would not be honest.

What changes the cost is, firstly, whether the motor has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Bishop Auckland Snooker Club.

That's why every call from Town Head starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it has run.

Once they are known, a range becomes one firm number.

You get that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: many include misfuelling.

## Still alongside the vehicle in Town Head?

Then, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.
