# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Town Street: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a thorough flush, done right where the vehicle sits in Town Street, is usually what it needs if caught before your engine runs.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest explains why it comes about and what to prevent it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Plenty of newer diesels in Wangford, like those in Town Street, run on two fluids; the engine takes only the diesel.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream and cleans it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel gets filled at every forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Town Street

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off St Margaret's Drive, or outside Flintknappers on the way home that evening.

New-to-you cars come second, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It takes seconds, be it out in Brandon or bang in the centre of Town Street.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, at a forecourt in Town Street or a driveway over in Santon Downham. Seconds, that's all.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally don't.

- The size. On many motors the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Brandon? Check with the person who drove it last before leaving, rather than when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light comes on, anywhere in Suffolk, use this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never in a rush by Pond Lane on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave it on.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Town Street: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief order, then. Top of it: your motor remains unstarted.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch the car on.

Diluting it with extra diesel fails, because AdBlue settles to the bottom instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

The staff at BP, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the vehicle clear when you ask.

Your own driveway around Town Street is where it should stay.

When the motor has been run by now, pull over safely and turn the vehicle off.

On the M11, under 50 miles from Town Street, that means the next junction.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Town Street makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles towards Ely — so tell us about how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Town Street, what happens?

The van comes to your car wherever it stopped — your own drive, near Saint Peter's Church, or outside Forest Academy.

Which fluid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask since those replies decide the work and quote.

The price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Draining the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of your system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Then we fire it up and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## The short version for Town Street drivers

Before you tip, read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere across Suffolk, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
