# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Townfoot? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep the engine off and leave your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It doesn't burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when the system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Townfoot, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your engine has run.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Townfoot: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- Keys out — that way nobody can power anything on.

- Put your hazards on if you are at all near moving traffic.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what went in and roughly how much.

- Give us a postcode starting CA10 1, or whichever street is closest, and the van reaches you directly — so ring wherever you are.

Not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your vehicle: your motor remains off.

- Plenty of diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave the car off.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't weaken it.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short way up Fiddler's Lane.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

The attendants on duty at any Townfoot forecourt — the the nearest petrol station among them — will usually help rolling it aside if you ask.

On your own drive, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The motor isn't what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts really differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It sinks, since it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its supply from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in North Dykes overnight and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, undrawn — but it will be first through if your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of harm from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow passages; meanwhile, because it eats at certain metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

A motor left sitting around Townfoot with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's regularly worse than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the another forecourt nearby, and this problem is diluted fuel.

Blended into the diesel and left still, it is harmless at that stage; using the motor is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It cannot simply be run through, since it doesn't burn.

Whether the car sits in Glassonby or the heart of Townfoot, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other slip, and the flush counts more. The reasons: it will not remain mixed, and so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

With AdBlue, the good news is no separate from petrol.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever around Cumbria the car has stopped.

## Townfoot: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, now and then behind a single flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

It mostly takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, rather than at the filling station.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Lazonby C of E Primary School, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

Someone pours the container in outside their house, right off B6412, as the day ends.

Otherwise, in dim light outside The Crown Inn, the car is topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

Rented motors, brand-new cars, fleet cars, or the second vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar vehicles see it the most.

An identical mistake, same first response — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Townfoot or the remainder of Cumbria.

## Townfoot: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

Through the filter, through the lines, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is how far it travels.

Lumpy running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: any may show up, maybe part way across Townfoot or returning from Tank Wood.

No starting it again to test: stop when safe, then turn it off.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Exit the M6, under 5 miles from Townfoot, at the next junction and stop safely, rather than driving on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Townfoot to the car park by Saint Nicholas is a very different job from a run towards Carlisle, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the motor has been run.

Very rarely does it leave long-term damage when it's spotted quickly.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Townfoot: what it takes

The vehicle stays put, whether that's a street beside Lazonby Bowling Club, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt around Townfoot, and the van comes to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the engine has run, because those replies settle the work.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and both the polluted diesel and the urea leave at once.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed all the way through because what remains won't flush out unaided.

After that, the fuel filter: flushed, or changed when it has to be. Then clean diesel, then a check of your car.

Not run? Then count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the last step.

Whether it is a parking space by Lazonby & Kirkoswald or a driveway around Townfoot, that is where our technicians fire it up and you set off.

Our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel before we go.

No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Afterwards, you are given paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

## About Townfoot

Townfoot is a suburban area situated on the riverside in Cumbria, with a relatively low elevation of around 80 metres. Townfoot lies near the city of Carlisle, approximately 13.5 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Lazonby and Kirkoswald. Townfoot has a population of around 574 people and is characterised by predominantly detached housing. Townfoot is located in the North West region of England, about 248 miles from London.

## AdBlue drains across Cumbria, Townfoot included

AdBlue jobs in Townfoot are passed to vans that serve the places around it — Lazonby, Kirkoswald plus High Bankhill — and most of Cumbria beyond, throughout CA postcodes.

Close to a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down? Checking beats assuming, and so phone.

Townfoot is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Townfoot: the cost of fixing it

No single figure could be fair, since each job differs.

What shifts the cost is, first, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue was put in; and after that where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight gap behind Lazonby Methodist Church.

That is why every call from Townfoot starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run.

With those replies, a range shrinks to a single firm number.

Before anyone heads out, you are told the quote on the phone. And payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## Alongside the vehicle around Townfoot, still?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Townfoot or anywhere in Cumbria.
