# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Townsend Fold

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, leave your ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Townsend Fold.

Reading before the event? In that case what follows covers how it happens and what to stop it happening at all.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels on the roads round Townsend Fold and Hall Carr carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

The exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side behind one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the error happens.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Townsend Fold

It's hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Clayton Avenue before work, or in the car park at Whitchaff on the way home.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — because a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one did not.

No part stops the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it happens in Balladen or the middle of Townsend Fold, it's the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Townsend Fold forecourt or a driveway out in Longholme, take a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — many motors mark what belongs in each inlet just there.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Accrington? Ask the person who drove the car last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere in Lancashire, use this routine.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, engine off, and not rushed by Duckworth Lane on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — after you've found your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two share a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut throughout. After that, start your car.

Find at step two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Townsend Fold already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Leave the ignition off too, since on many diesels it alone runs your pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the pump if you're at a forecourt — the Shell, the Tesco or somewhere else.

Your own drive around Townsend Fold is where it stays.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then switch off.

Townsend Fold sits under 3 miles from the M66; there, use the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Townsend Fold is less a job than a trip of under 15 miles to Salford, and so say.

## What takes place when our technicians get there around Townsend Fold

The van reaches the vehicle anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, beside TK Maxx, or outside Rawtenstall Balladen Community Primary School.

What liquid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those answers set the work and quote.

You get that price on the phone, before anybody heads out.

Draining the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the system.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals build up, some metals corrode, and nothing washes out unaided, however long it is left.

Testing is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We do not leave until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after we get there, as long as the engine has not run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
