# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Townsend: Why It Occurs

Stop here a minute if your diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Townsend.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel feeds your motor — but many current diesels driven around Townsend and Pye Corner hold a second liquid too.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

There is a filler for every tank.

Many of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Filling your diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Townsend

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

Haste comes from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Higher Street, or on the way home in the car park at The Kings Head.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is a second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Merriott or bang in the centre of Townsend.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Be it a Townsend forecourt or a drive over in Snails Hill, spend a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook says where it lives if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you collect a rental or fleet car — at Crewkerne's car park, perhaps — rather than once the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever in Somerset the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Townsend Orchard.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check again — confirm your diesel filler remained closed throughout. Only then, start the car.

Discover at the second or third stage that AdBlue went into the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Skip step five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Townsend?

Do not start your engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than mixing — and that's where the fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the Texaco or the Esso, ask the attendants to help roll your car away from the pump.

Your own drive around Townsend is the place it should stay.

When the motor has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe and switch it off.

Townsend sits under 15 miles from the M5; on it, take the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Wells, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Townsend.

## When our technicians arrive in Townsend, what happens?

Outside Merriott Primary School, close to All Saints or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — what liquid, what amount, and if it has run — so we ask.

No one heads out before you have had the price by phone.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, once the tank is emptied.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Filter flushed or, where needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of the car.

After that we start the engine and check it runs smoothly before we leave.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## About Townsend, for a moment

Townsend is a suburban area in inland Somerset, situated approximately 54 metres above sea level. Townsend lies near the towns of Merriott and Wells, and is part of a network of small settlements including Merriottsford and Furringdons Cross. Townsend has a population of around 929 people and predominantly features semi-detached housing.

## AdBlue drains about Townsend, and Somerset beyond

Townsend is a residential suburb, and our teams that cover it also work the places around it, Merriottsford and Furringdons Cross among them, across the TA postcode area.

A postcode starting TA16 5 gets the van to you fastest.

Shifting the vehicle isn't needed.

Anywhere it sits — near Merriott Village Hall, on a layby heading to Vaux Park Polo Club, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of The Blessed Virgin Mary, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## In short, for Townsend motorists

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave it off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere across Somerset.
