# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Trench

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does your motor.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that is AdBlue.

The trouble begins once it is sucked through the pump — it won't burn, and it won't blend with diesel.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and thoroughly flushed where your car stands in Trench.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Trench: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

- Remove your keys, and that stops someone turning the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the product and the quantity, so don't throw it out.

- Give us a postcode starting TF2 6, or whatever street is nearest, and the van finds you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Things not to do:

- Don't start the engine, even for a moment to shift your car.

- Many diesels power their pump the moment your ignition comes on, so leave it off.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more fuel will not weaken it.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch along Bridge Close.

- Do not try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

The staff working at any Trench filling station — the Esso included — will usually lend a hand pushing it clear if you ask.

Stopped on your own driveway? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is fed into your exhaust, and there it cleans the gas.

Neither side fits the other: urea does not belong in an injection pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It drops, since it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its supply from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Wombridge last night and has not turned since. The AdBlue sits at the foot of that tank, undrawn — but it would be first through once the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks certain metals in the fuel system, and keeps going till it's flushed out.

A motor left sitting around Trench with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running past them, and so the water part harms them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger fault?

Petrol put into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that's the main problem.

No damage comes while it stays unused, mixed into your diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is plainly the wrong one.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Nor can it be thinned, since it splits back out — and the next tankful won't clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the centre of Trench or out in Donnington, costs more than almost any other slip.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Emptying a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in Shropshire the car sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Trench?

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars rests right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it's never the forecourt: a driver picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside St Luke's Catholic Primary School, a Voluntary Academy. the refill is rushed.

Someone tips the container in at home, just off Teagues Crescent, as the day ends.

Or your car is topped up in the car park at The Bridge, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least familiar vehicles get it most — rentals, new cars, fleet cars, and the other motor in a family with both fuel types.

Leave it switched off: that is the first step to an identical mistake, anywhere around Trench or the rest of Shropshire you are.

## Trench: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

The filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may show up, maybe part way across Trench or coming back from Middle Pool Wood.

Stop when it is safe. Turn off. Leave the car off instead of testing it again.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the M54, under 3 miles from Trench, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why crossing Trench to park beside Holy Trinity and a drive of under 25 miles towards Wolverhampton are such distinct jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has been run, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it's caught early.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Trench?

A road beside Oakengates Leisure Centre, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere your vehicle has come to rest in Trench, our engineers travel to it.

Which fluid got in, roughly the quantity, plus if your engine has been run: our technicians ask first, because those shape the job.

Next, emptying the tank right there removes the polluted diesel and the AdBlue together.

Your system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Clean diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested.

Engine not run? In that case expect about half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no issue, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

The last step is to prime the system on new diesel.

Whether it's a parking bay at Oakengates or a drive around Trench, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

The check before our technicians go is that it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

## About Trench

Trench is a suburban area in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of 91 metres, with Trench Lock and Wrockwardine Wood nearby. Trench is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, reflecting the typical residential development of the West Midlands region. Trench is located approximately 16 miles from Wolverhampton and 129 miles from London, making it a commuter-friendly location. Trench has a population of around 4584 residents, according to recent estimates.

## Trench and Shropshire: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs in Trench go to teams that serve the places around it — Trench Lock, Wrockwardine Wood as well as Hortonwood — and much of Shropshire further out, throughout TF postcodes.

Close to a border, or somewhere tricky to explain? Checking beats guessing, so ring.

No moving is needed. In Trench, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: the vehicle is emptied where it stands, whether on a drive, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Trench

There's no fair single price, because the jobs are not the same.

Three things change the price: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the vehicle is. That last one rests on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight gap behind Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses.

For that in mind, each call from Trench opens by asking the identical trio — what went in, how much, if it ran — ahead of any figure.

With those replies, a range narrows to a single firm figure.

You hear that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## Next to your car in Trench, still?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, across Trench or anywhere in Shropshire, after you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and if the engine ran.
