# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Trethomas

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, leave the motor off then keep your ignition off.

Water with urea dissolved in it: that's AdBlue.

The trouble starts once it is pulled through your pump — it will not burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Trethomas.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Trethomas: the first few minutes

Do:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put the hazards on.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Give us a postcode starting CF83 8, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Don't do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your vehicle: the engine stays off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel will not thin it.

- Don't drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short distance down Navigation Street.

- Draining that tank yourself by the road isn't one to try.

Rolling the car away from the pumps is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Trethomas forecourt you are on, the Esso or any other.

At home, the car stays just where it was left.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is squirted into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

Not one side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and an injection pump can't deal with urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and settles low where the intake takes its supply from.

Simplest of all: one that got AdBlue in Waterloo last night and has not turned since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — though it would be the first thing through once the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

What remains once the water evaporates is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and clog filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it is flushed out.

By daybreak, a car parked around Trethomas with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; where it is just inside the tank, it doesn't.

Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, which is a second form of harm.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Morrisons, and the problem is diluted fuel.

No damage is done while it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only once the engine runs on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance.

Not burning, it can't just be run through.

Whether your vehicle sits in Lansbury Park or the centre of Trethomas, firing it up "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other error, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't stay blended, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the next fill.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the simplest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever around Caerphilly your vehicle has stopped.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Trethomas

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and in dim light the two can look identical. Nobody means it.

A container picked up when heading home and tipped in outside the house, rather than at the filling station, is the usual story.

Usually, it happens in one of a few familiar ways.

The top-up gets hurried outside the local primary school, because your dash lit up with a warning while the children were taken in.

Someone pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Glebe Road, as the day ends.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside Ruperra Sports & Social Club Ltd., in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the cars people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it off: that's the first response to the same mistake, anywhere around Trethomas or the remainder of Caerphilly you are.

## Trethomas: started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through the filter and lines.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might appear, maybe part way across Trethomas or coming back from Riverside Park.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Trethomas lies under 5 miles from the M4; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up safely instead of driving on.

A quick hop across Trethomas to the car park by Trethomas Cenotaph is one thing; driving towards Cardiff, under 10 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after the engine has been run.

When it is caught quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

## Trethomas: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A street beside The Parish Trust - Trethomas Life Centre, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever the car has come to rest around Trethomas, our engineers travel to it.

The job depends on three replies, and we ask for first — which fluid went in, the amount, and whether your engine has turned over.

Then that tank is emptied where your car stands, so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Your system is flushed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that your car is tested.

Roughly half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the engine has not run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes at the end.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where the car is parked, by Caerphilly or on a drive around Trethomas.

Our technicians make sure it runs properly on new diesel before we leave.

We do it all wherever the vehicle has stopped, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

A mobile service suits Trethomas, a village: you have no need to take the car to us, because our technicians drain it on the spot, on a drive, a side street, a car park or a filling station.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Trethomas: the cost of fixing it

Since the jobs differ, a flat price would not be fair.

Whether the motor has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of your car, because an open drive is easier for a van to reach safely than a tight gap behind Trethomas Christian Fellowship.

That is why every call from Trethomas starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

Given those replies, a range narrows to a single fixed number.

Our quote is given on the call, before anyone leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we're on the way.
