# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Trevor: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, leave the ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where your vehicle stands around Trevor, is normally what it needs if caught before the motor runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many modern diesels in Garth Trevor, as well as Trevor, carry on two liquids; your motor gets just the diesel.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to fresh it, from a separate tank.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump goes on constantly.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Trevor: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Station Road before work, or in the car park outside Telford Inn on the way home.

New-to-you vehicles come next, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

Nothing stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It takes a few seconds, be it in Pont Cysyllte or right in the centre of Trevor.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Cefn-bychan or a forecourt in Trevor, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On many vehicles, size tells: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Ruabon.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere you are around Wrexham — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Llangollen Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have found your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Stop once your tank fills or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently using the built-in spout.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Trevor?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — and so keep it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the Esso or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Trevor.

Where your motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch it off.

The next exit means where to come off when you're on the M53, under 25 miles from Trevor.

Distance matters — a short hop across Trevor is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Wrexham — so tell us about how far it went.

## Our arrival around Trevor, and what happens next

By Weston Rhyn Primary School, close to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct or on your own drive: wherever the car has stopped, we come to it.

The replies decide the work and our price, and so our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

No one sets off before you've heard our price over the phone.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Then our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs smoothly before leaving.

If your engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

Trevor is a village, and our teams that cover it also work the towns near it, Acrefair and Aber-nant among them, across the LL postcode area.

Give a postcode that starts LL20 7, and our van arrives quickest.

The vehicle stays put.

Wherever it sits — beside War Memorial, on a lay-by en route to Tŷ Mawr Country Park, on a drive — that's where it is drained.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Cefn Bank? By a border? Asking is better than assuming, and so ring.

## In short, for Trevor motorists

Tip no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it waits, anywhere around Wrexham.
