# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Trowbridge? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and the ignition as well.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts once your pump begins pulling it.

If your motor has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully rinsed where the car stands around Trowbridge.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Trowbridge

Do:

- Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.

- Put the hazards on if you're at all near moving traffic.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call right where you are. Quote a CF3 1 postcode or the nearest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Don't:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: your engine stays off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of thinning.

- Do not drive it anywhere, not even a short way up Greenock Road.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

On a forecourt in Trowbridge, whether it's the Tesco or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

On your own drive, do not touch it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

From a separate tank it is fed straight to your exhaust, cleaning what the engine emits.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and no part of that was intended to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

When the system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, which is how a vehicle filled in Llanedeyrn Village yesterday and not started remains the straightforward case, as long as no one turns the key.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the components it reaches for as long as it remains there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the pipework, leaving it till morning around Trowbridge makes it worse. Inside the tank only, time does nothing.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water part harms them by itself.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more serious than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Texaco and you have an issue of thin fuel.

No harm comes while it sits put, mixed into the diesel — only when the engine works on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Whether your car sits in Pwll-Mawr or the heart of Trowbridge, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't stay blended, so diluting it fails; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits only in that tank, the simplest section of the whole system to clear, anywhere your vehicle has come to rest around Cardiff.

## Trowbridge: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly happens at home, from a bottle grabbed en route home, not at the filling station.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

The top-up gets hurried outside the local primary school, after the dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken off.

Close to Menai Way, a driver pours a container in on the drive after work.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at New Bridge Inn, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Rented motors, new vehicles, fleet vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it most.

Leave it switched off: that is the first step to the same slip, wherever around Trowbridge or the remainder of Cardiff you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Trowbridge, and the engine started?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It's been sucked through your filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Perhaps coming back from ABC Park, or part way across Trowbridge, your engine might go lumpy, smoke, lose pace, flash your dash or stall.

Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

On the A48(M), under a mile from Trowbridge, the first junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further in. That's why a hop across Trowbridge to park near St. John Lloyd Church and a drive of under 5 miles for Cardiff are very different jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been run, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

If it's spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Trowbridge?

Anywhere it has stopped around Trowbridge — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a road by Trowbridge Community Centre — the van comes to your vehicle.

Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run, since those replies decide the work.

Then that tank is emptied where the car waits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash away unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol.

After that, your filter: flushed, or replaced when it must be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your vehicle.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once our technicians arrive, if your motor has not run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

New diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the last step.

You drive off as soon as our engineers have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Trowbridge or in a bay outside Heath High Level.

It is checked on new diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before we leave.

Because the job is done in its entirety where the vehicle is, a garage never comes into it.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come afterwards.

## About Trowbridge, for a moment

Trowbridge is a suburban area in Cardiff, situated near the coast and approximately 3.9 miles from the city centre. Trowbridge has a relatively low elevation of 34 metres and is characterised by semi-detached housing. Trowbridge is close to nearby places such as Llanrumney, Rumney, and St Mellons, and is home to around 7707 residents.

## Trowbridge and Cardiff: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around Trowbridge are passed to vans that cover the places around it — Llanrumney, Rumney as well as St Mellons — and most of Cardiff further out, throughout CF postcodes.

Phone and ask rather than guess if you're by a county line, or anywhere awkward to pin down.

No moving is needed. In Trowbridge, a residential suburb, a van that comes to you fits: your car is emptied where it stands, be it in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Trowbridge?

Each job is different, and so no fixed quote is honest.

Three things move the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a technician can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight spot behind The Prayer House at Bethania.

Ahead of any figure, not afterwards, each call from Trowbridge begins with the same three questions: the liquid, the quantity, plus if it ran.

Once they are known, a range becomes one fixed figure.

You hear that quote by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with plenty of insurance policies, so it is worth looking at yours before the van gets there.

## Trowbridge: still next to your car?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, in Trowbridge or anywhere within Cardiff, after you phone 0333 366 0103 to say it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if it ran.
