# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Trub? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into your diesel tank, keep your engine off then keep the ignition off.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble only starts once your pump starts pulling it.

If your engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally emptied and carefully rinsed where your car stands in Trub.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Trub: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

- Pull your keys out, and so nobody switches your ignition on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- Hold on to the receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- The van locates you quickest with a postcode starting OL11 2, or simply the name of a street nearby, so phone from the spot.

Do not do these:

- Shifting your vehicle just a few yards is no reason to start the engine.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself starts the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not thin it.

- Even a short distance up Thornham New Road is too far to drive it.

- Beside the road, don't try emptying it on your own.

Ask the attendants to help you roll your car off the island if you're at a forecourt in Trub, whether it's the BP or elsewhere.

If you are on your own drive, leave it precisely where it stands.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your engine.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't made to cope with it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It drops, because it is heavier than diesel, and settles low where the pickup draws its supply from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Stake Hill last night, and has not been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

Two kinds of harm follow from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filter elements and narrow passages; and, because it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

A motor left sitting in Trub with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and each injector depend on diesel flowing through them, so the water part damages them by itself.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake at the Tesco, and this problem is thinned fuel.

No damage is done while it stays put, mixed into the diesel — only once the engine works on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Kirkholt or the middle of Trub.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and with no running, the AdBlue stays in there — wherever in Greater Manchester your vehicle sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Trub: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors rests right next to the diesel filler, sometimes under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It usually happens outside the house, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the filling station.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside St Gabriel's Roman Catholic Primary School, Rochdale the top-up is rushed.

After work, a bottle goes in on a drive near Westbrook Close.

Another pattern: darkness, a pub car park by The Old Post Office Ale House, and a driver opening that flap the first time.

Rented motors, brand-new motors, fleet motors, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles get it the most.

Keep it off: that is the first step to an identical slip, anywhere in Trub or the rest of Greater Manchester you happen to be.

## Already started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Trub?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

It has been pulled through your filter and the lines, and if the motor ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Perhaps returning from Chesham Park, or midway across Trub, the engine might run rough, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Trub sits under a mile from the M62; if you were on it, leave at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than driving on.

Mileage counts: each mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system, and so heading towards Manchester, under 10 miles away, makes a much larger job than crossing Trub to the car park by St Martin.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to clean out once your engine has been run, and we do all of it where the car has stopped.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage when it's spotted soon.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Trub: what it takes

The vehicle stays put, whether that is a road near St John, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Trub, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run, because those replies determine the work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is drained, on the spot.

Residue from AdBlue will not flush out by itself, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol.

Fresh diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or swapped, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we arrive, provided your engine has not run.

Quiet enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime your system, and that's the last step.

Whether it's a parking bay at Castleton or a drive in Trub, that is where our engineers fire it up and you drive off.

It is checked on fresh diesel to be sure it runs properly before our engineers head off.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers ask for.

## AdBlue drains in Trub and across Greater Manchester

Our teams that answer AdBlue call-outs around Trub also cover the places round it, Castleton, Thornham Fold and Slattocks among them, and most of Greater Manchester beyond, across the OL postcode area.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Trub is a village, and a mobile drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be shifted to us.

## Trub: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single price could be fair, since each job is different.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that got in. After that it depends on where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind Castleton Sports Centre.

That's why each call from Trub starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it has run.

Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Before anyone sets off, you hear the price on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is on the way, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.

## In Trub and still alongside your car?

Then, the best thing to do with your vehicle is to not touch it.

Motor off, keys out, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, in Trub or anywhere in Greater Manchester, once you call 0333 366 0103 saying it was AdBlue, roughly how big an amount, and whether it ran.
