# Tufnell Park: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition remains off and so does your motor.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm happens until your motor pulls it through.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally drained and carefully cleaned where the car stands around Tufnell Park.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Tufnell Park

Do these:

- Pull the keys out, and so no one switches your ignition on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- So you can tell us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting N7 0, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Not to do:

- Shifting your vehicle even a short way is no reason to start the motor.

- Plenty of diesels run their pump the moment the ignition goes on, so leave the car off.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't thin it.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short way up Tufnell Park Road.

- By the road, do not attempt emptying it on your own.

The staff working at any Tufnell Park forecourt — the Esso included — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for your exhaust, AdBlue has no business in your motor.

From a separate reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine lets out.

Neither side fits the other: urea doesn't belong in an injection pump, and a pump cannot deal with urea.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays separate rather than blending — entirely different from fuel.

The intake sucks fuel from the deepest part of that tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Lower Holloway last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting till morning around Tufnell Park makes things worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting does nothing.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector depend on diesel running past them, so the water part harms them in its own right.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is commonly more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Shell, and the problem is diluted fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is in that tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It cannot just be run through, because it does not burn.

Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the next fill will not clear away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning your key "to see", in the heart of Tufnell Park or out in Upper Holloway, costs more than almost any other error.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever across Greater London the car has come to rest, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue still inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of any fuel system to clear.

## Tufnell Park: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel one, occasionally behind one flap, and muddling them up is simple in poor light.

A container picked up while heading home and tipped in at home, instead of at the filling station, is the usual story.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Hurrying, outside Tufnell Park Primary School, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

A driver pours the container in at home, right off Mercers Road, as the day ends.

Or a driver new to that flap refills your vehicle after dark, stopped in the car park by Tufnell Park Tavern.

Rented vehicles, new cars, fleet cars, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least known cars get it most.

Wherever across Greater London, Tufnell Park included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first step: leave it off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Tufnell Park, and the motor started?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

Via the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — given any running time — into the injection pump and every injector: that's how far it has gone.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard lights or stalling: any might appear, maybe part way across Tufnell Park or returning from Foxham Gardens.

Stop when safe. Switch off. Leave the vehicle off instead of restarting it to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Tufnell Park lies under 5 miles from the M1; if you were on it, exit by the next junction and pull up safely instead of driving on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Tufnell Park to the car park by Saint George and All Saints is a very different job from a run towards London, under 5 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the fuel system with each mile.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the vehicle came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out after the motor has been run.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage when it's caught quickly.

## What draining AdBlue from a diesel involves around Tufnell Park

A road beside The Rock Tower, a driveway, a lay-by or a forecourt: wherever your car has come to rest around Tufnell Park, our engineers come to it.

What was put in, about the quantity, and whether the engine has been run: our technicians ask first, since those shape the work.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one when your tank is drained, right there.

What remains from AdBlue won't flush away unaided, and so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts much more with urea than for petrol.

Testing your car comes last, after clean diesel goes in and the filter is cleaned or, where necessary, replaced.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our technicians are there.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

The final step is to prime the fuel system on new diesel.

You head off as soon as our technicians have started the car, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a drive in Tufnell Park or in a space by Upper Holloway.

It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we go.

We do it all wherever the car has stopped, and it never has to be taken to a workshop.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## AdBlue drains across Tufnell Park and Greater London

Over the N postcode area, the vans taking AdBlue call-outs in Tufnell Park reach much of Greater London too, Holloway, Archway and Kentish Town among them.

Near a boundary, or somewhere tricky to pin down? Checking beats assuming, and so phone.

Tufnell Park is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it is, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Tufnell Park?

No flat price would be fair, since each job differs.

Whether the engine has run, and for how long, comes first in what moves the price. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the car, because an open driveway is simpler for our van to get to safely than a tight space behind Yerbury Farmers' Market.

Which fluid went in, how much, and if the engine ran: each Tufnell Park enquiry opens by asking exactly that, before any quote, never afterwards.

With those replies, the range shrinks to a single firm figure.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, the job is settled on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Look at your policy whilst we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## In Tufnell Park and still alongside the car?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the rest, in Tufnell Park or anywhere in Greater London, after you phone 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if the engine ran.
