# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tulloch: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

Leave your engine and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around Tulloch, catching it before your engine runs normally leaves draining and a full flush where it stands.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page explains the why it takes place and the how to prevent it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your motor — but plenty of modern diesels driven around Tulloch and Hillyland carry a second fluid too.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying cleans the gas.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on constantly.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Tulloch: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Mathieson Drive before work, or in the car park outside The Maltings on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a strange car.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Letham or bang in the centre of Tulloch.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Tulloch forecourt or a drive over in North Inch, spend a couple of seconds on these before anything goes in.

- Check the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue caps are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of motors have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Perth, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

For the day the warning comes on — anywhere you are around Perth and Kinross — a simple routine to follow.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Primrose Crescent.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where both share a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Tulloch: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting your motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The attendants at BP, Tesco or another forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the car away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Tulloch.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M90 — under 3 miles out of Tulloch — at the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Perth, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Tulloch.

## What happens when our technicians arrive around Tulloch

Our van comes to your car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, beside Knox Free Church, or outside the local primary school.

Which fluid went in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask because the replies decide the work and quote.

On the phone call itself, you are told our price — ahead of anything else.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, after that tank is cleared.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

We do not go until it has been started and is running properly.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour after our engineers arrive.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.
