# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Tullos? Keep It Switched Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does your engine.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor blends, and no harm starts until the motor sucks it through.

In Tullos, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before your motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the vehicle is.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Tullos: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- So no one can turn the ignition on, take the keys away.

- If you're at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the amount, and so don't throw it out.

- Call just where you are. Say a AB12 3 postcode or the nearest street name, and no one has to search for you.

Don't:

- Moving your vehicle just a short way is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Many diesels power their fuel pump the instant the ignition goes on, so leave the car off.

- AdBlue does not mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not weaken it.

- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Greenbank Place.

- Do not try to drain it yourself by the kerbside.

Get the people behind the counter to help you move the car away from the island if you are at a forecourt around Tullos, whether it's the Shell or somewhere else.

At your own driveway, do not touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Balnagask last night, and has not been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has pulled it in.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

It attacks some metals used in fuel systems, attacking whatever it reaches until it is removed completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels.

If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it till morning around Tullos makes things worse. Inside your tank alone, waiting does nothing.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel flowing past them, and so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel frequently the bigger issue?

Put petrol in a diesel at the BP and you have a problem of thin fuel.

Blended into your diesel and sitting still, it is harmless at that stage; using the motor does the damage.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, so it can't just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it can't be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Ferryhill or the middle of Tullos.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Never run? Then the AdBlue waits only in that tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever your car has come to rest around Aberdeen City.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Tullos

It's not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel one, now and then behind one flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark.

Mostly it is not the filling station: someone picks up a bottle driving home and pours it in at home.

It tends to take place in a few familiar ways.

The top-up gets rushed outside the local primary school, after the dash flashed with a warning while the kids were dropped off.

In the evening, a bottle goes in on a drive close to Greenbank Crescent.

Else, after dark by The White Cockade, the car is topped up by someone opening that flap the first time.

Hired motors, new motors, company motors, or the second vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least known cars get it the most.

An identical slip, an identical first step — keep it off — anywhere you happen to be around Tullos or the rest of Aberdeen City.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Tullos?

Then the AdBlue has left that tank.

It's been sucked through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and your injectors.

You may see your engine running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Tullos Community Wildlife Garden & Growing Space or halfway across Tullos.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

On the M90, over 50 miles from Tullos, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere sensible is where to stop — not carrying on.

A quick hop across Tullos to the car park by Balnagask Community Centre is one matter; driving towards Aberdeen, under 3 miles away, is something else, since every mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage matters.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Once the engine has been run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where your car has ended up.

If it is spotted soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves around Tullos

Our technicians come to the car, wherever it has stopped in Tullos: a side street near Spain Park, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if your engine has been run, because those answers decide the work.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

Residue from AdBlue will not flush out unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which matters much more with urea than with petrol.

Testing your vehicle comes at the end, once clean diesel is added and the fuel filter gets flushed or, where needed, replaced.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once our engineers turn up, if your engine hasn't run.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Bleeding your system with fresh diesel comes last.

Then our technicians start the engine and you head off, whether from a parking space at Aberdeen or a drive in Tullos.

We confirm it runs properly on fresh diesel before leaving.

The whole job is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

Guessing doesn't help by a county line or anywhere tricky to describe; phone and ask.

## Tullos: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There is no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

Three things change the price: whether your engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Cruyff Court Neale Cooper.

What went in, what quantity, plus if the engine ran: each Tullos enquiry begins with exactly that, ahead of a quote, never afterwards.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Priced by phone before the engineer heads out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Look at your insurance while we are on the way: plenty carry misfuelling cover.

## In Tullos and still alongside the car?
