# Turnpike Lane: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause here a minute if the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Turnpike Lane.

Here before the event? Then the rest covers how it happens and what to stop it ever happening.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Not one fluid but two: that is what plenty of newer diesels around Turnpike Lane and Harringay run, with diesel for your engine.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

There's a filler for every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Turnpike Lane: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Turnpike Mews, or on the way home in the car park at The Toll Gate.

New-to-you motors come next, too. Hire cars, new cars and company cars place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

Whether it occurs in Hornsey or the middle of Turnpike Lane, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in West Green or a forecourt around Turnpike Lane.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually isn't. Read it rather than going by position.

- Plenty of motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many vehicles have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Hornsey.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

Wherever in Greater London the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Turnpike Lane, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — once you've found your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the car on.

- Stop when that tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently through the own spout.

- Before you start your car, shut the cap and check again that your diesel cap never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Turnpike Lane?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your motor.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Texaco, ask the staff to help roll the vehicle away from the pump.

On your own drive around Turnpike Lane? So your car stays where it is.

Already started? Pull over when it's sensible, then switch off.

Turnpike Lane sits under 10 miles from the M1; on it, use the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards London, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Turnpike Lane.

## Turnpike Lane: what occurs when we arrive

The van reaches the car anywhere it stopped — your own drive, near Taiba Community Centre, or by North Harringay Primary School.

Both the work and our quote rest on three answers — which fluid, which quantity, and whether it has run — so we ask.

That price is given over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

The system is then purged thoroughly, after your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After the filter has been cleaned — or replaced, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and then your vehicle gets tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Unstarted vehicles usually mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It is worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.
