# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tweedbank

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your engine off and leave your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Not like fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and no harm starts until the motor sucks it through.

If your motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally emptied and carefully rinsed where the car stands around Tweedbank.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank around Tweedbank

Things to do:

- Keys out — then no one can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about how much, save the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call just where you are. Say a TD1 3 postcode or the closest street sign, and no one has to search for you.

Never:

- No starting your motor — not briefly, not to reposition your car.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Never drive the car anywhere, not even a short stretch up Cotgreen Road.

- No draining it yourself, at all, at the roadside.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, wherever Tweedbank forecourt you're on, the BP included.

Parked on your own drive? Then it remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, where it treats the fumes.

Nothing inside an injection pump is made for this fluid — and none of it was meant to go that way.

It doesn't blend. Once it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like fuel.

The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: being denser than diesel, it sinks.

Once your system runs, the AdBlue is first to go through. Before then it waits beneath your diesel, which is how a car filled in Netherdale last night and never switched on remains the straightforward one, as long as no one turns your key.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

It eats at some metals found in fuel components, attacking any part it reaches till it's removed completely. And when the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow passages.

A car left standing around Tweedbank with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank isn't.

And there's the water: it brings no lubrication to the components that rely on it most — the injection pump and every injector.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is frequently worse

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Esso, and the issue is thinned fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's in the tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running your motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is simply the wrong one.

It can't simply be run through, because it does not burn.

Deposits and corrosion stay through the following tankful, and AdBlue splits back from the diesel, and so watering it won't help. That is why the flush matters more, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly any other mistake — in Langlee or the heart of Tweedbank alike.

The same good news holds as with petrol.

Clearing a tank is the simplest job on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in there — anywhere in Scottish Borders your vehicle has stopped.

## Tweedbank: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of vehicles sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Mostly it is never the filling station: a driver picks up a container heading home and pours it in at home.

It tends to occur in a couple of familiar ways.

The refill gets hurried outside the local primary school, because the dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped in.

Near Tweedbank Drive, a driver pours a bottle in at home after work.

Else, in dim light outside The Woodcutter, the vehicle gets topped up by a driver using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical slip, same first step — leave it off — wherever you are in Tweedbank or the remainder of Scottish Borders.

## Tweedbank: started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via the fuel filter and lines.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: each may show up, maybe part way across Tweedbank or coming back from Queen Elizabeth Square.

No starting it again to check: pull over when safe, then turn it off.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Leave the M8, under 50 miles from Tweedbank, by the next junction and stop safely, not driving on.

Every mile pushes the AdBlue further into the system. That is why a hop across Tweedbank to park near Tweedbank Community Centre and a drive of under 50 miles for Edinburgh are such separate jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where the vehicle has come to a stop, and once the motor has run there is more of it.

If it's noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Tweedbank

A street beside Tweedbank Sports Complex, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: wherever the car has come to rest around Tweedbank, our engineers travel to it.

Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and if your motor has turned over: our engineers ask first, because those decide the job.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is drained, on the spot.

Your system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in after the fuel filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

Most of these jobs are a half-hour job once we get there, if the engine hasn't run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no fault, and it's quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the final step.

Whether it's a parking bay by the nearest station or a driveway in Tweedbank, that is where our technicians fire it up and you head off.

Before we leave, we check it's running properly with clean diesel in.

Our technicians do it all wherever the vehicle has ended up, and it never needs to be taken to a garage.

At the end, there is paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice plus a report from the engineer.

Assuming doesn't help close to a county line or anywhere hard to describe; phone and ask.

Tweedbank is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it is, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Tweedbank: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

Because the callouts vary, a flat price wouldn't be honest.

Three things change the price: whether the motor has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one turns on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind Tweedbank Outdoor Sports Complex.

That is why each call from Tweedbank starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it's run.

The answers turn a range into a straight price.

Quoted by phone before the engineer heads out, it is paid for on the day — card or phone, no deposit.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Tweedbank: still next to the vehicle?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Tell us it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Tweedbank or anywhere in Scottish Borders.
