# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Twyford: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

Stop here a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when the engine hasn't run, it's emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits in Twyford.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Not one liquid but two: that's what plenty of newer diesels around Twyford and Bodicote run, with diesel for the engine.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, where a spray cleans the gas.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on many motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Filling the diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Twyford: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

On a driveway off Greenhill before work, or in the car park outside The Red Lion heading home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle tells you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Unfamiliar motors are next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as easily, and after the tip starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Twyford or out in Adderbury.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Twyford or a drive out in Kings Sutton. Seconds, that's all.

- Read the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Kings Sutton.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever around Oxfordshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Rawlins Close.

- Silly as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- Both behind a single flap? Then confirm the lid on your diesel side is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Twyford: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start your motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base rather than blending — and that's where your fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Esso, Sainsbury's or another forecourt will usually help to push the car clear if asked.

On your own drive in Twyford? Then the vehicle remains where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the engine has already run.

Leave the M40 — under a mile out of Twyford — at the next exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Oxford, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Twyford.

## Our arrival around Twyford, and what occurs next

Anywhere the car came to rest, whether by Christopher Rawlins Church of England Primary School, near Banbury West End Lawn Tennis & Squash Club or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Both the work and the price rest on three replies — what fluid, what amount, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

On the phone call itself, you are told the price — ahead of anything else.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the entire system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. Hence it counts more.

Testing is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night outside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## About Twyford and where it is

Twyford is a small village in Oxfordshire, situated inland at an elevation of 117 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type. Twyford lies approximately 18.9 miles from Oxford and 62 miles from London, placing it in a rural setting with nearby villages including Adderbury, East Adderbury, and West Adderbury. Twyford has a population of around 577 residents, making it a tight-knit community. Twyford's location allows for easy access to the surrounding countryside and nearby urban centres.

## AdBlue drains across Oxfordshire, Twyford included

Twyford is a rural village, and the teams that cover it also work the towns around it, East Adderbury and West Adderbury among them, across the OX postcode area.

A postcode starting OX17 3 gets the van to you fastest.

The car does not need to move.

Draining happens right there, whether a driveway, a road by Adderbury Methodist Chapel, or a lay-by on the way to Adderbury Lakes.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Adderbury Library? By a county line? Asking beats guessing, and so ring.

## The short version for Twyford motorists

Pour no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same, leave it off and call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it waits, anywhere around Oxfordshire.
