# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Tyrfran? Don't Start It

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then leave the motor off — and the ignition too.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; trouble only comes once your pump starts drawing it.

In Tyrfran, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Tyrfran: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Things to do:

- Pocket the keys, and that stops anyone turning the electrics on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- Which fluid, and about what volume? Save the bottle or the receipt, and our engineers will see.

- Tell us a postcode starting SA15 3, or whichever street is nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so call wherever you stand.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll the car: your engine remains off.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Keep the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Gower View.

- Do not try to drain the car yourself by the kerbside.

The attendants working at any Tyrfran filling station — the Texaco among them — will normally help rolling it clear if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car exactly where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The motor is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it's squirted into the exhaust to clean the gases.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Tipped in with your diesel, it keeps apart rather than mixing — entirely unlike fuel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and pools below it — the very spot the intake draws from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Furnace last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

After it's pulled in, the damage comes in two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; and, because it attacks certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside.

Overnight, a car sitting in Tyrfran with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's only in your tank, nothing changes.

Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Asda, and this issue is diluted fuel.

Damage just comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and left in your tank, it does nothing.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It doesn't burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, since it splits again — and the next tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Tyrfran or out in Box, costs more than nearly any other slip.

As with petrol, there is good news.

If the motor hasn't run, the AdBlue is still in that tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Carmarthenshire the car is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Tyrfran

Many vehicles put the AdBlue filler beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one intends it.

It usually occurs outside the house, from a container grabbed on the journey home, rather than at the forecourt.

Usually, it occurs in one of a few familiar ways.

The refill is rushed outside the local primary school, because your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were dropped off.

Close to Lôn y Dderwen, someone pours a bottle in at home after work.

Or someone new to that flap tops up your vehicle in dim light, parked in the car park by Tafarn y Cross.

It takes place most in the vehicles drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Anywhere around Carmarthenshire, Tyrfran as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Tyrfran?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Via the filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and every injector: that is where it travels.

Perhaps coming back from Parc Howard, or part way across Tyrfran, the engine may run lumpy, smoke, drop pace, light up your dash or cut out.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Leave the vehicle off rather than testing it again.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M4, under 5 miles from Tyrfran, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Mileage matters: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system, so driving for Swansea, under 15 miles away, makes a much bigger job than hopping across Tyrfran to the car park by Parc Howard Museum.

Let us know about how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out after your engine has been run.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it's spotted early.

## Tyrfran: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

Anywhere it has come to rest around Tyrfran — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a street beside Gorsedd Stone Circle — the van comes to your vehicle.

Before anything else our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and whether the engine has run, because those replies determine the work.

Then your tank is emptied where the vehicle stands, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

With AdBlue, far more than with petrol, flushing matters: the fuel system is flushed right through since residue won't flush out unaided.

Clean diesel goes in once the fuel filter is flushed — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

The pumps are explosion-proof, fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Priming the system with new diesel comes at the end.

Then our engineers start it and you head off, whether from a parking bay at Llanelli or a driveway around Tyrfran.

Our engineers check it runs properly on clean diesel before we go.

No garage is required at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

## About Tyrfran itself

Tyrfran is a suburban area in Carmarthenshire, situated near the coast and approximately 10 miles from Swansea. Tyrfran sits at an elevation of around 47 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Tyrfran is close to nearby places such as Pentre-Poeth, Llanerch, and Mount Pleasant, and is part of the wider Swansea urban area. Tyrfran has a population of around 5229 people, according to approximate estimates.

## AdBlue drains across Carmarthenshire, Tyrfran included

Our vans that answer AdBlue call-outs in Tyrfran also cover the places round it, Pentre-Poeth, Llanerch and Mount Pleasant among them, and most of Carmarthenshire beyond, across the SA postcode area.

Close to a boundary, or somewhere awkward to explain? Checking beats assuming, so phone.

Tyrfran is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether the car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it stands, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Tyrfran

Each job differs, and so no fixed price would be fair.

What changes the cost is, first, whether the engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue got in; and finally where the vehicle is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight space behind The Salvation Army.

That is why every call from Tyrfran starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it's run.

With them, the range narrows to a single firm number.

The price is quoted during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van gets there.

## Tyrfran: still beside your car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, right now, the most useful thing you can do.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Tell us it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Tyrfran or wherever in Carmarthenshire.
