# Undercliffe: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the engine.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

Not like fuel, it neither ignites nor mixes, and no harm starts till the engine sucks it round.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully purged where your car stands in Undercliffe.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## Undercliffe, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

Do these:

- Pull the keys out, so nobody switches the ignition on.

- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Which product, and about how much amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our technicians will know.

- Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting BD2 4, or just the name of a street nearby, so phone from the car.

Never:

- Do not start the motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- Your ignition stays off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance down Sowden Buildings.

- By the road, don't attempt emptying it on your own.

The attendants on duty at any Undercliffe forecourt — the Texaco among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it stands.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Not the motor but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps apart instead of blending — quite unlike fuel.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

A motor filled on a drive in Fagley overnight and left unstarted is the simple case. Nothing has pulled the AdBlue up yet — but when the engine turns, that is what goes first, directly from the bottom of your tank.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it is corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps working on the parts it reaches for as long as it stays there.

Overnight, a car parked in Undercliffe with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; where it is only inside your tank, it doesn't.

Then there's the water: it brings no protection to the parts that rely on it the most — the high-pressure pump and every injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the BP, and this problem is thinned fuel.

Blended into your diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat at that stage; using your motor is the damage.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally unsuitable substance.

Since it does not burn, running it through is not an option.

Crystals and corrosion remain after the next tankful, and AdBlue splits again out of your diesel, so thinning it can't help. That is why the flush matters so much, and turning your key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other mistake — in Bolton Outlanes or the heart of Undercliffe equally.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and the tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in West Yorkshire the vehicle is sitting.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Undercliffe

It's not deliberate. Many vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally behind a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

A few familiar ways cover the majority of them.

Hurrying, outside Peel Park Primary School and Nursery, after a warning lamp came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Northcote Road.

Or someone unfamiliar with that flap refills the vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Malt Kiln.

The least familiar cars see it the most — hire cars, new cars, company ones, and the other vehicle in a home with both fuels.

Anywhere in West Yorkshire, Undercliffe as well, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: keep it switched off.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Undercliffe?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

It's been drawn through the filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

Maybe returning from Undercliffe Cricket Ground, or part way across Undercliffe, the engine might go rough, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or cut out.

Once safe, stop then turn it off — without restarting to see.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Exit the M606, under 3 miles from Undercliffe, at the next junction and stop safely, rather than carrying on.

How far it went counts. A couple of hundred yards across Undercliffe to the car park by Imam Yusuf Motala Academy is a very different job from a run towards Bradford, under 3 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with every mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where the car has ended up, and once the motor has run there is more of it.

Caught soon, it very seldom leaves permanent damage.

## Undercliffe: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The car remains where it is, whether that is a road beside Spring, a driveway, a layby or a filling station around Undercliffe, and our van travels to it.

Three answers shape the work, and so before anything else we ask which fluid was put in, roughly the amount, and whether your motor has turned over.

Then that tank is drained where the car sits, and so the polluted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A careful flush counts far more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue will not clear away by itself.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Priming your system with fresh diesel comes last.

Firing it up comes next, and then you set off from where your car is parked, by Bradford Forster Square or on a drive around Undercliffe.

The check before we head off is that it runs properly on fresh diesel.

Our technicians do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to be taken to a garage.

Afterwards, you are given the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere tricky to explain? Asking beats guessing, and so phone.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Undercliffe

There is no fair single quote, since the jobs are not the same.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St James Community Hall.

Before any quote, not afterwards, every enquiry from Undercliffe opens with three checks: the liquid, the amount, and if it ran.

Once they are known, a range becomes one firm figure.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance while we're on the way: plenty include misfuelling cover.

## In Undercliffe and still alongside the vehicle?

Then, the most helpful thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Engine off, keys out, ignition off.

Tell us it's AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel handles it, in Undercliffe or wherever within West Yorkshire.
