# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Upper Cheddon: Why It Occurs

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly purged where the vehicle sits around Upper Cheddon.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that's how plenty of modern diesels near Upper Cheddon and Kingston St Mary carry, with diesel feeding the engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have the two side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Upper Cheddon: how it happens

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

Hurry follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done quickly, before work on a driveway off Upper Cheddon, or heading home in the car park outside The Swan at Kingston.

Unfamiliar cars come second, too. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in just as readily, and after the tip starts, no part halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Upper Cheddon or out in Mill Cross.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A few seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Dodhill or a forecourt in Upper Cheddon.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones normally are not.

- Many vehicles fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many motors mark what belongs in which filler right there.

- The handbook says where it lives when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you collect a rental or company car — from Taunton's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever in Somerset the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and never rushed by Cheddon Fitzpaine Road at the roadside.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip step five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Upper Cheddon already?

Don't start the motor: that's where the short order of things starts.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch the car on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Texaco, the Asda or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Upper Cheddon.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next junction means the place to leave when you're on the M5, under 3 miles from Upper Cheddon.

A short hop across Upper Cheddon is a smaller job than a run towards Wells, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers get there in Upper Cheddon, what takes place?

Anywhere the vehicle has stopped, whether by Cheddon Fitzpaine Church School, beside Kingston Club or at home, our van comes to it.

Our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because the replies determine this work and the quote.

You get that quote on the phone, before anybody sets off.

Then your tank is cleared and the fuel system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Once the filter is cleaned — or replaced, if required — clean diesel is added, and then your vehicle is tested.

Next our engineers start the engine and check it runs properly before we go.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after our technicians arrive, provided the motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Shifting the car isn't needed.

The drain takes place right there, be it a drive, a street by Cheddon Fitzpaine Memorial Hall, or a layby towards Gadd's Bottom Nature Reserve.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Hestercombe Gardens.
