# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Upper Gornal: Why It Happens

Leave your engine and ignition off then phone 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Around Upper Gornal, catching it before the engine turns normally leaves draining and a full flush on the spot.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it happens and the ways to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Many newer diesels on the roads about Upper Gornal and Woodsetton carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have the two together under one flap.

At the petrol pump, the diesel side is topped up constantly.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is filled — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

## Upper Gornal: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

Hurry follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Eve Lane, or heading home in the car park outside The Green Dragon.

New-to-you motors are second, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company motors place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, once started, keeps on.

Whether it takes place in Ruiton or the middle of Upper Gornal, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Upper Gornal forecourt or a drive over in Lower Gornal, spend a few seconds on these before any goes in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Many motors fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Coseley, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — anywhere it is around West Midlands — a routine to use.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Green Lane.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew the cap works — after you have located the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and check once more — making sure your diesel cap remained closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Upper Gornal?

Do not start your engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

Keep the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it by itself runs your fuel pump.

Diluting it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the bottom rather than blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Shell, ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump.

Your own drive in Upper Gornal is the place it stays.

When the motor has been run already, stop somewhere safe then turn the car off.

The next junction is the place to come off if you're on the M5, under 5 miles from Upper Gornal.

Distance counts — a short hop across Upper Gornal is a smaller job than heading under 5 miles to Wolverhampton — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Upper Gornal, and what takes place next

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it by Wrens Nest Primary School, beside St Peter or at home, our van travels to it.

The answers determine the work and the price, and so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run.

You get that quote by phone, before anyone heads out.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once the tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Once the fuel filter is flushed — or renewed, where required — clean diesel is added, and then the car gets tested.

Before we go, our technicians start it and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour once our engineers get there, as long as your engine has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, have a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

Quickest of all: quote a DY3 1 postcode for our van.

The car stays where it is.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Swanbrook Valley, a side street close to Upper Gornal Methodist Church: our engineers drain the vehicle where it is.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of The Black Country Wellbeing Centre.
