# Upper Settle: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Engine off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has got into the diesel tank.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

The trouble starts once it is sucked through your lines — it will not ignite, and it will not combine with diesel.

In Upper Settle, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs usually means a drain and a thorough flush, right where the car is.

No step comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## What to do straight away, Upper Settle: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- Pocket your keys, and that stops anyone turning the electrics on.

- Near moving traffic? So put the hazard lights on.

- Hold on to your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Tell us a postcode starting BD24 9, or whichever street is nearest, and the van reaches you straight — so ring wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Don't start your engine, even for a moment to move the car.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself starts the pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue will not mix, so it is pointless.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short distance along Green Croft.

- No emptying it yourself, either, at the roadside.

The attendants working at any Upper Settle filling station — the Asda Express included — will usually lend a hand rolling it clear if you ask.

At your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

From a dedicated tank it goes directly to your exhaust, treating what your engine lets out.

A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

It doesn't blend. Once it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves not at all like fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Stackhouse overnight and hasn't been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of that tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through if the motor runs, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It attacks certain metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it reaches till it's removed from your system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and lodge in narrow channels.

A motor left standing around Upper Settle with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Water lubricates nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing through them, and so the water part damages them by itself.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel often the bigger problem?

Put petrol in a diesel at the another forecourt nearby and you have a fault of thin fuel.

It mixes with your diesel, and while it's inside that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Because it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Whether the car is in Mearbeck or the centre of Upper Settle, turning it over "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't stay blended, so watering it down is impossible; and crystals and corrosion outlast the following fill.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere in North Yorkshire the car has stopped.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Upper Settle?

Many cars put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally behind one flap, and after dark the two can look the same. No one means it.

A bottle bought while heading home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the typical story.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

The top-up gets rushed outside Settle Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, after your dash flashed with a warning while the kids were dropped off.

A driver tips the container in outside their house, just off Commercial Street, as the day ends.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your vehicle after dark, parked in the car park by The Talbot Arms.

Hired motors, brand-new vehicles, company cars, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar cars get it the most.

Anywhere across North Yorkshire, Upper Settle included, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: keep it switched off.

## Upper Settle: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

The filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and some running time takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or cutting out: any may appear, perhaps part way across Upper Settle or returning from Grove Park.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Upper Settle lies under 15 miles from the M65; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

Hopping across Upper Settle to the car park by Gallery on the Green is one matter; heading towards Lancaster, under 25 miles away, is something else, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Once your engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has ended up.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage if it is spotted soon.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Upper Settle: what it takes

The vehicle stays put, whether that's a road beside Settle Community Library, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt in Upper Settle, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else our engineers ask what was put in, about how much, and whether your motor has been run, because those answers settle this work.

Then your tank is emptied where the vehicle waits, so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

Your system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

A test of your vehicle comes last, after clean diesel is added and the filter is flushed or, if needed, replaced.

Engine not run? In that case expect about half an hour on site for most jobs.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding the fuel system with clean diesel comes at the end.

Whether it's a parking space outside Settle or a drive in Upper Settle, that is where our engineers fire it up and you head off.

We make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel before we leave.

No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done on the spot.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Upper Settle

No single price would be fair, since every job differs.

What changes the price is, firstly, whether your engine has been running and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and finally where your car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Museum of North Craven Life.

For that reason, each call from Upper Settle begins with the identical trio — what got in, what quantity, whether the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Once they are known, a range becomes a single fixed number.

The quote is given on the call, before anyone leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
