# Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Upper Stoke

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

In Upper Stoke, finding it before the motor runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

Many modern diesels in Stoke Park, as well as Upper Stoke, carry on two liquids; your motor takes just your diesel.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Other motors keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both side by side under one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place in Upper Stoke?

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Coventry Street, or outside The Rose and Woodbine on the way home that evening.

New-to-you vehicles are second, too. Hire cars, new motors and company cars place their fillers differently, and the hand reaches for the cap used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

It takes seconds, whether in Stoke Heath or right in the centre of Upper Stoke.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Be it a Upper Stoke forecourt or a driveway over in Wyken Green, take a few seconds on these before any is poured in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many cars. Look for it.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that's where your filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Coventry? Check with whoever drove it last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Midlands that is.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Shakespeare Street.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It sounds silly. It works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both share a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, then look once more — confirm the diesel cap stayed shut throughout. After that, start the car.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Step five stays off limits.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Upper Stoke already?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the attendants to help push the vehicle clear of the pump if you are on a forecourt — the the nearest petrol station, the Murco or somewhere else.

Your own drive in Upper Stoke is the place it should stay.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next junction is the place to leave if you're on the M6, under 3 miles from Upper Stoke.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Upper Stoke is smaller a job than a run of under 3 miles towards Coventry, so say.

## Upper Stoke: what takes place when we arrive

Anywhere the car came to rest, be it outside Stoke Primary School, near St. Alban's Church or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

What fluid was put in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies set both work and price.

Nobody sets off before you've had the quote over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and the system purged thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither clears out unaided. That is why it matters more.

The filter cleaned or, where needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

After that our engineers fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before we leave.

Unrun vehicles usually mean a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a live filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

It's worth checking your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

As a residential suburb, Upper Stoke shares its vans surrounding places — Middle Stoke, Church End — all the way through CV postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting CV2 4.

Your car remains where it is.

Draining happens right there, be it a drive, a road by St Michael's, or a lay-by on the way to Barras Heath.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Stoke Heath Community Centre, ring and ask instead of assuming.

## The short version for Upper Stoke motorists

Always, the cap; then, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, anywhere in West Midlands, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
