# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Upper Tean: Why It Happens

Pause reading a minute if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is around Upper Tean.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it does not — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

No single liquid but two: that's how many newer diesels near Upper Tean and Huntley run, with diesel feeding the engine.

Your exhaust, not your motor, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank comes with a filler of its own.

Other cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others place both together under one flap.

Topping up your diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Upper Tean: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the car, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off High Street, perhaps at White Hart on the way home after work.

The old car's filler is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That's the second thing: a strange motor.

Nothing stops the tip after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Upper Tean or out in Teanford.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Gorstyhill or a forecourt around Upper Tean, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it next to the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says where.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you pick up a rental or company car — from Blythe Bridge's car park, say — rather than when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Staffordshire that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never rushing on the side of Draycott Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Upper Tean?

Do not start the motor: that's where the short order of things begins.

Leave the ignition off too, because on many diesels switching it on alone runs your pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

The staff at Tean Service Station, Knights Of Cheadle or any forecourt will normally lend a hand pushing your car clear when asked.

On your own drive around Upper Tean? Then the vehicle remains put.

Already run? Stop once it's safe, then turn off.

Upper Tean sits under 10 miles from the M6; there, use the next exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Stoke-on-Trent, under 10 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Upper Tean.

## Our arrival around Upper Tean, and what happens next

By St Thomas' Catholic Primary School, near Upper Tean Christ Church or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

The answers determine this work and the price, so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it has run.

Nobody heads out until you've heard our price over the phone.

Draining that tank comes next, then a full flush of the system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter cleaned or, where it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians get there, as long as the motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night outside a house.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

Your car stays where it is.

A driveway, a lay-by on the way to Tean Recreation Ground, a side street close to The Heath House: our technicians drain it where it sits.

Ring and ask instead of guessing if you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St. Chad's Church.

## Upper Tean drivers: the short version

Tip no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave it off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, throughout Staffordshire.
