# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Vauxhall? Don't Start It

Motor off, ignition off: that's where you begin if AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank.

Water with urea mixed in it: that's AdBlue.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and never combines with diesel; trouble just starts when your pump starts pulling it.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Vauxhall, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it is caught before the motor has been run.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Vauxhall, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do these:

- Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are anywhere near moving traffic.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the quantity, and so don't throw it out.

- Ring just where you are. Quote a SE11 5 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Do not:

- Moving the car even a few yards is no reason to fire up your motor.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Do not drive the vehicle anywhere, not even a short stretch along Vauxhall Walk.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

At a forecourt around Vauxhall, whether it is the JET or another one, ask the attendants to help you roll the car away from the petrol pump.

On that drive, your car stays just as it is.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

From a separate tank it is fed directly to your exhaust, treating what the engine lets out.

Neither side suits the other: urea doesn't belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

It doesn't blend. After it is tipped into a tank of diesel, AdBlue acts not at all like diesel.

Heavier than diesel, it drops and collects underneath it — the very place the intake sucks from.

Easiest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Oval last night and hasn't been started since. The liquid sits at the foot of the tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through once the engine starts, ahead of any diesel at all.

It causes two kinds of damage from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filters and narrow passages; meanwhile, since it eats at certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

Where the AdBlue has reached the lines, leaving it overnight around Vauxhall leaves it worse. Inside that tank alone, time does nothing.

Diesel protects the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives none of that, which is a second kind of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more significant than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with after filling a diesel with petrol at the Texaco.

Blended into your diesel and sitting unused, it is no threat at that stage; using your motor is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid as such is simply the wrong one.

It can't just be run through, because it does not burn.

Whether your car sits in Lambeth or the centre of Vauxhall, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than almost any other error, and the flush counts for more. The reasons: it will not stay blended, and so diluting it is impossible; and deposits and corrosion outlast the following tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never run? Then the AdBlue waits only inside that tank, the easiest section of the whole system to empty, anywhere the vehicle has come to rest across Greater London.

## Vauxhall: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Many vehicles place the AdBlue cap beside the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap, and in dim light the two can appear the same. Nobody intends it.

Usually it's never the forecourt: a driver picks up a container heading home and pours it in outside the house.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The refill gets hurried outside Vauxhall Primary School, because your dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken off.

Someone tips the bottle in at home, just off Worgan Street, as the day ends.

Or the vehicle is topped up in the car park at The Black Dog, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

Hired vehicles, brand-new cars, fleet vehicles, or the second car in a family with both fuels: the least familiar cars get it the most.

Wherever in Greater London, Vauxhall included, the slip does not change, and neither does the first response: leave it switched off.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Vauxhall, and the engine started?

The AdBlue has left that tank, then.

It's been pulled through the filter and the lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors.

You may see the motor running unevenly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, possibly on the way back from Vauxhall Gardens Allotments or halfway across Vauxhall.

No restarting to check: stop when it is safe, then switch everything off.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M4, under 10 miles from Vauxhall, by the next junction and park somewhere safe, not driving on.

How far it went matters. A few hundred yards across Vauxhall to the car park by Following the Leader is a very different job from a run towards Westminster, under a mile away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

Wherever the car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to clean out once the engine has been run.

Long-term damage is very rare when it is spotted quickly.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Vauxhall?

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Vauxhall: a side street near Vauxhall Gardens Community Centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else we ask what went in, about how much, and if your engine has been run, because those replies decide this work.

Then the tank is cleared where the car waits, and so the tainted fuel and the AdBlue come out together.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than after petrol, since residue won't wash out by itself.

Testing your car follows at the end, after fresh diesel is added and the filter gets cleaned or, where necessary, replaced.

Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Bleeding your system with new diesel comes at the end.

Starting the engine comes next, and then you set off from where the car is parked, by the nearest station or on a drive in Vauxhall.

It's checked on new diesel to be sure it runs properly before our technicians go.

Our engineers do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a garage.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

## About Vauxhall

Vauxhall is a suburban area in the London borough of Lambeth, situated on the south bank of the River Thames. Vauxhall sits at a low elevation of around 3 metres, close to the city centre and near the neighbouring areas of Victoria and Millbank. Vauxhall is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and its proximity to major landmarks like Westminster, which is approximately 0.9 miles away. Vauxhall has a population of around 17,129 people, making it a densely populated area.

## AdBlue drains across Greater London, Vauxhall included

AdBlue call-outs around Vauxhall are passed to vans that cover the towns around it — Victoria, Millbank plus South Lambeth — and much of Greater London further out, throughout SE postcodes.

Ring and ask instead of guessing when you're by a county line, or somewhere tricky to pin down.

Vauxhall is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Vauxhall

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, since an open drive is easier for a van to get to safely than a tight spot behind Hope Church.

That is why every call from Vauxhall starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Our price is given during the call, before anyone sets off; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, and nothing upfront.

Check your policy while we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Beside the car in Vauxhall, right now?

Then, the best thing to do with the car is to not touch it.

Keys out; motor and ignition off.

Call 0333 366 0103: AdBlue, roughly how much, plus if the engine ran are all our technicians need. Petrol in Diesel handles the rest throughout Greater London, Vauxhall included.
