# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Vauxhall: Why It Happens and How to Stop It

Pause here for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, done just where your car sits around Vauxhall, is usually all it takes when caught before the engine runs.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it does not — useful if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Vauxhall and Egremont carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less regularly.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Vauxhall: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Chisenhale Street before work, or in the car park at The Goat on the way home.

Next, the hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old car — since a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Vauxhall or out in Liverpool.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you pour anything, on a drive in Seacombe or a forecourt around Vauxhall.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows where it is if your filler isn't next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Moorfields.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

The day the light goes on, wherever across Merseyside, use this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Love Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, pour gently through its own spout.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Vauxhall: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the motor.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so keep it off.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where fuel is taken from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the EG On the Move or the Costco, ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive around Vauxhall.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the Kingsway, under 3 miles from Vauxhall, that means the next junction.

Mileage matters — a short hop across Vauxhall is a smaller job than heading under a mile to Liverpool — so tell us about how far it went.

## When our engineers arrive around Vauxhall, what takes place?

By The Trinity Catholic Academy, near Quarry Venue or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, since the answers settle the work and the price.

Nobody sets off before you've had our price by phone.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of the vehicle.

Next our engineers fire it up and make sure it runs smoothly before leaving.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## About Vauxhall

Vauxhall is a suburban area located on the coast of Merseyside, near the city of Liverpool. Vauxhall sits at a low elevation of around 16 metres, with the Irish Sea to the west and the city centre of Liverpool just 0.8 miles away. Vauxhall is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and is situated near other Liverpool suburbs such as Kirkdale and Everton.

## AdBlue drains across Merseyside, Vauxhall included

Vauxhall is a residential suburb, and the vans that cover it also work the places near it, Kirkdale and Everton among them, across the L postcode area.

A postcode starting L3 7 gets our van to you fastest.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Blackstock Gardens Memorial, a lay-by on the way to Mazenod Court Serenity Garden, a drive.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Eldonian Village Hall, ring and ask rather than guessing.

## In short, for Vauxhall people

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same, leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Merseyside.
