# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Viables: Why It Occurs

Leave the motor and ignition off and call 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, if the engine has not turned, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where the car sits around Viables.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Viables and Brighton Hill carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean them, from its own tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Plenty of motors have a single flap for the two, whereas some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Topping up the diesel side at the pump happens all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what filler to use.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Viables

Carelessness rarely causes it. What does is three things coming up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Jays Close, perhaps at The Golden Lion on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: a strange car.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after started, carries on.

Kings Furlong or the middle of Viables: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Check these before pouring, on a forecourt in Viables or a driveway out in Black Dam. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many cars mark which belongs in each inlet just there.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Basingstoke.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Anywhere around Hampshire the light comes on, this is a routine for the day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of The Harrow Way.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.

- Both under a single flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel side is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Slowly is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, and check once more — making sure the diesel cap remained closed the whole time. After that, start the car.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Stage five is off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Viables?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the motor.

Leave the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs your pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

The staff at BP, Shell or any forecourt will usually help to push the vehicle clear if you ask.

If you are on your own drive in Viables, leave the vehicle where it stands.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Viables lies under a mile from the M3; on it, take the next junction.

A short hop across Viables is a smaller job than a run towards Winchester, under 25 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Viables, and what takes place next

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Chalk Ridge Primary School, near Basingstoke and Alton Railway or on your own drive.

The answers decide the work and our price, so we ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run.

The price is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then the tank is emptied and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After the fuel filter has been cleaned — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel is added, and then the car is tested.

The engine is started next and tested to be sure it runs smoothly, all before we go.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour visit after arrival. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; plenty include cover for misfuelling.

## About Viables, briefly

Viables is a suburban area in Hampshire, situated approximately 45 miles from London and 16 miles from the historic city of Winchester. Viables sits inland at an elevation of around 103 metres, surrounded by nearby places such as Kings Furlong, Cliddesden, and South Ham. Viables is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the typical residential development of the region.

## Viables and Hampshire: AdBlue drains across the area

As a residential suburb, Viables shares its vans surrounding areas — Cliddesden, South Ham — right through RG postcodes and the wider area around them.

Give a postcode beginning RG22 4, and our van gets there quickest.

Moving your car is not necessary.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street near Viables Community Centre Four Lanes Room, a lay-by on the way to Horwood Gardens Open Space, a drive.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Viables Community Centre Main Hall? Close to a county line? Asking beats guessing, so phone.

## Viables drivers: the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you have read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around Hampshire, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank all the same — so leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103.
