# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Viewpark? Keep It Switched Off

AdBlue in the diesel tank? Then keep your engine off — and the ignition as well.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

The trouble begins once it is pulled through the lines — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Viewpark, is generally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has been run.

Phone 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Viewpark, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do straight away

Things to do:

- Take the keys out, so no one switches the ignition on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the till receipt tells us the fluid and the quantity, so don't bin it away.

- Our van locates you fastest with a postcode starting G71 5, or just the name of a street close by, so phone from the spot.

Don't:

- Do not start your motor, even for a moment to shift the vehicle.

- The ignition remains off: on many diesels, turning it on is enough to start the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Even a short stretch up Burnhead Street is too far to drive the vehicle.

- By the road, do not try draining it on your own.

Moving the car away from the island is a job for attendants to help with, whichever Viewpark forecourt you are on, the BP included.

On that drive, your car remains exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

Stored in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust to treat the fumes.

No part inside an injection pump is made for this liquid — and none of that was meant to travel that way.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once poured in, won't. The behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of your tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Uddingston overnight and has not been started since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through once the motor starts, before any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it attacks certain metals, each part it touches keeps suffering for as long as it remains in there.

By daybreak, a vehicle parked around Viewpark with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; if it is just inside the tank, it doesn't.

The water in it causes damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is commonly worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Shell's forecourt leaves the fuel watery — that is the whole problem.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it is inside the tank it does no harm; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely unsuitable substance.

Not burning, it can't simply be run through.

Whether the car is in Kirkshaws or the centre of Viewpark, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other error, and the flush counts for more. Why: it will not remain mixed, and so watering it down is impossible; and deposits and corrosion survive the following tankful.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Anywhere across North Lanarkshire the vehicle has stopped, an unstarted motor leaves the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the easiest part of any fuel system to clear.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Viewpark

It's not deliberate. Many cars keep the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, occasionally under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

Mostly it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

The top-up gets hurried outside the local primary school, because the dash flashed with a warning as the children were taken in.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Rowantree Avenue.

Else, in dim light outside The Stables Bar, the car gets refilled by a driver using that flap for the first time.

Hired cars, new motors, fleet motors, or the spare car in a home with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most.

Wherever in North Lanarkshire, Viewpark as well, the slip does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it off.

## Viewpark: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

It has been pulled through the fuel filter and the fuel lines, and if the engine ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Perhaps returning from Jimmy "Jinky" Johnstone Memorial, or part way across Viewpark, your engine might run lumpy, smoke, lose power, light up the dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the car to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Exit the M74, under a mile from Viewpark, by the first junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

A quick hop across Viewpark to the car park by Liber8 Health and Leisure is one thing; heading for Glasgow, under 10 miles away, is something else, since every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

Our engineers do all of the cleaning where the vehicle has stopped, and once the engine has been started there is more of it.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it is spotted quickly.

## Viewpark: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

A road by Jimmy "Jinky" Johnstone, a drive, a lay-by or a filling station: anywhere your vehicle has stopped in Viewpark, our technicians come to it.

Three replies shape the job, and so before anything else our technicians ask what went in, roughly what quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after the tank is drained, on the spot.

The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The majority of these jobs are a half-hour job once we turn up, if your motor has not run.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, the fuel system is bled with clean diesel.

At that point our engineers fire it up and you set off, whether from a parking bay outside Uddingston or a drive in Viewpark.

Before we go, our technicians make sure it is running smoothly with new diesel in.

Our technicians do it all wherever the car has ended up, and it never needs to go to a workshop.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once this job is done.

A mobile service fits Viewpark, a residential suburb: you have no need to bring your car to us, since we drain it on the spot, on a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Viewpark?

No single figure would be honest, because each job differs.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that went in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Robertson Park.

Before any figure, not afterwards, each call from Viewpark begins with the same three questions: the fuel, the quantity, and if it ran.

Those replies narrow the range down to a single number.

Before anyone heads out, you hear our quote on the phone. Then you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your insurance whilst we are on the way: many include misfuelling cover.

## Alongside the vehicle in Viewpark, still?

Not touching your car is, right now, the best move you can do.
