# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Waddicar? Don't Start It

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your engine off — and your ignition as well.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Waddicar, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your engine has run.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Waddicar: the first few minutes

Do:

- So nobody can switch the ignition on, pull your keys away.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put your hazards on.

- Which product, and roughly how much amount? Save the bottle or the till receipt, and we will see.

- Give us a postcode starting L31 1, or whichever street lies closest, and the van reaches you straight — so call wherever you stand.

Don't:

- Do not start your engine, even for a moment to move the vehicle.

- Your ignition stays off: on lots of diesels, switching it on is enough to run your pump.

- Pouring in more diesel does not work: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Leave it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short stretch along Liddell Avenue.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the verge.

Moving your vehicle away from the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Waddicar forecourt you are on, the the nearest petrol station included.

At home, the vehicle stays just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but your exhaust is where AdBlue is meant to go.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

It sinks, since it's heavier than diesel, and settles down where the pickup draws its fuel from.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that had AdBlue in Aintree last night and hasn't turned since. The liquid sits at the base of the tank, undrawn — though it will be the first thing through once the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow passages; and, because it eats at certain metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it stays inside.

A car left standing around Waddicar with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

A problem of thinned fuel is what you get after filling a diesel with petrol from the Gulf.

Blended through your diesel and sitting unused, it's harmless for now; using your engine is the damage.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the liquid itself is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

Deposits and corrosion stay through the next tankful, and AdBlue separates back out of your diesel, so watering it can't work. That is why the flush counts more, and turning the key "to see" costs more with AdBlue than nearly any other slip — in Kirkby or the centre of Waddicar alike.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without start-up, the AdBlue stays in it — wherever across Merseyside the vehicle sits.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Waddicar?

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many cars sits right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

A container bought when driving home and tipped in at home, rather than at the filling station, is the usual route.

It tends to happen in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Melling Primary School the top-up is rushed.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Rock View.

One more version: dim light, the car park by Bootle Arms, and someone using that flap the first time.

The least known vehicles see it the most — hire cars, new cars, fleet cars, and the spare car of a home with one of each fuels.

Wherever you're around Waddicar or the remainder of Merseyside, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave it off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Waddicar?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in the tank.

Via the fuel filter, through the lines, and — with any running — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's where it travels.

Watch for rough running, smoke, lost power, lights on the dash, or a cut-out — coming back from Rainbow Park, say, or midway across Waddicar.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Waddicar lies under a mile from the M57; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and pull up safely rather than driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue further into your system. That's why crossing Waddicar to park near St Thomas and a drive of under 10 miles towards Liverpool are such distinct jobs.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

Once the engine has been started, the flush takes in more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has stopped.

Long-term damage is very rare if it is noticed soon.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Waddicar: what it takes

Wherever it has stopped in Waddicar — a filling station, a layby, a driveway, a street beside Westvale Chapel — the van travels to the vehicle.

Three answers shape the work, so first we ask what got in, roughly what quantity, plus whether the motor has run.

Next, draining that tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together.

The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Next, the filter: flushed, or changed if it has to be. After that fresh diesel, and then a check of the vehicle.

Not run? In that case count on roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy filling station is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Fresh diesel goes in to prime the fuel system, and that is the last step.

Whether it's a parking space by Kirkby or a drive in Waddicar, that is where our engineers fire it up and you head off.

It is tested on new diesel to confirm it runs correctly before we leave.

No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done on the spot.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

## About Waddicar and where it is

Waddicar is a suburban area in Merseyside, situated near the River Alt and close to the city of Liverpool. Waddicar is characterized by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock, typical of many suburban areas in the North West of England.

## AdBlue drains around Waddicar and across Merseyside

Kirkby Park, Melling and Westvale are among the places near Waddicar that the same teams reach, together with most of Merseyside further out, throughout the L postcode area.

Phone and check rather than guess if you are by a border, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

A mobile service suits Waddicar, a residential suburb: there's no need to bring the car to us, because our technicians drain it there, on a drive, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Waddicar: the cost of fixing it

Not one flat figure would be honest, because each job is different.

Three things shift the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can get to it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind St. Michael's Church.

What was put in, how much, and if the engine ran: each Waddicar call opens with exactly that, before any quote, never after.

When those are known, a range turns into a single fixed figure.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody sets off, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As our engineer is travelling, dig out your insurance: many cover misfuelling.

## Still alongside the car around Waddicar?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, roughly how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Waddicar or anywhere across Merseyside.
