# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wales: Why It Happens

Keep your motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, when your engine hasn't run, it is emptied and fully cleaned where your car sits around Wales.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel car

No single liquid but two: that's what many modern diesels near Wales and Todwick carry, with diesel feeding your motor.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel gets filled at every filling station call-out, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Wales?

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

On a drive off Church Street before work, or in the car park outside The Duke of Leeds on the way home: that's where the rushed top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Hire cars, new cars and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the pour after it has started.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Wales Bar or bang in the centre of Wales.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Wales or a drive out in Woodall. A few seconds, no more.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- Many cars fit AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Open the filler flap and look for a label — many motors mark what goes in which filler right there.

- The handbook shows where it lives if your filler is not next to your diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Kiveton Bridge, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in South Yorkshire that is.

- Pull in on level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Wales Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" aloud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly. It works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave it on.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then look again — making sure your diesel filler remained shut the whole time. Only then, start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Step five stays out.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Wales already?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

The fuel pump starts on many diesels the moment the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at BP, Gulf or another forecourt will usually help to push the car away when asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Wales.

Already run? Pull over when it is sensible, then turn off.

The next exit means the place to leave when you are on the M1, under a mile from Wales.

About how far did it go? Crossing Wales is smaller work than a run of under 10 miles towards Sheffield, so say.

## Our arrival in Wales, and what occurs next

Anywhere the car has stopped, be it by Wales Primary School, beside Wales Square War Memorial or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

The replies determine the work and our quote, and so we ask what was put in, about how much, and whether it's run.

No one heads out before you've had the price by phone.

Then that tank is cleared and the system purged thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

The motor is started next and checked to be sure it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

## About Wales and where it is

Wales is a village in South Yorkshire, situated inland at an elevation of 111 metres, approximately 8 miles from Sheffield. Wales sits near the settlements of Wales Bar, Norwood, and Kiveton Park, in a region of gentle hills and valleys. Wales has a population of around 2200 people, predominantly living in semi-detached housing.

## Wales and South Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a rural village, Wales shares its vans surrounding places — Norwood, Kiveton Park — all the way through S postcodes and the wider area beyond.

Fastest of all: quote a S26 5 postcode to our van.

Shifting the car isn't needed.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to St John the Baptist, a lay-by on the way to Kiveton Park & Wales Recreation Ground, a drive.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Kiveton Park & Wales Village Hall? Close to a border? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.

## The short version for Wales motorists

Always, the cap; then, the pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere around South Yorkshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless — and so leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103.
