# Walkley: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page down a moment, leave your ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully rinsed where your vehicle sits in Walkley.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the engine — but many newer diesels seen round Walkley and Howard Hill hold a second liquid as well.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Walkley: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things coincide.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Whitehouse Road, perhaps outside The Blind Monkey on the way home after work.

Unfamiliar cars come second, as well. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour starts, no part stops it.

Hillfoot or the heart of Walkley: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt around Walkley or a drive over in Upperthorpe. Seconds, no more.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Sheffield.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever across South Yorkshire, use this routine.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, engine off, and never rushed by Industry Street at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, but it works.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, confirm it is closed before the bottle comes up.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Walkley?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help roll your car clear of the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Morrisons, the JET or somewhere else.

If you're on your own drive in Walkley, leave the car where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

The next junction means where to leave if you're on the M1, under 5 miles from Walkley.

A short hop across Walkley is a smaller job than a run towards Sheffield, under 3 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Walkley: what occurs when our engineers arrive

We come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Walkley Primary School, near St Bart's Church or on your own drive.

The answers decide the work and the quote, so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run.

Nobody sets off before you have heard the quote by phone.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, once the tank is cleared.

Much more than with petrol, it counts here: the crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears out on its own, no matter how long it is left.

Testing comes last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

Next our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Unstarted cars usually mean a half-hour job from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## About Walkley, for a moment

Walkley is a suburban area in South Yorkshire, situated near the River Don and close to the city centre of Sheffield. Walkley sits at an elevation of 119 metres, with terraced housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Walkley is located approximately 1.4 miles from Sheffield city centre, making it a popular residential choice for those who work in the city. Walkley has nearby areas such as Hillfoot, Lower Walkley, and Birkendale, which are also part of the larger community.

## Walkley and South Yorkshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over S postcodes, the vans that cover Walkley — a residential suburb — work the nearby places too, Birkendale and Lower Walkley included.

Quickest of all: quote a S6 2 postcode for the van.

Moving the vehicle is not needed.

Anywhere it sits — beside Middlewood Dance and Theatre School, in a lay-by heading to Ruskin Park, on a drive — that's where it gets cleared.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Hampden View Church? By a border? Checking is better than guessing, so ring.

## For Walkley drivers, the short version

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank regardless, leave it off then call 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere in South Yorkshire.
