# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Walkleywood: Why It Happens

Keep the engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

In Walkleywood, finding it before your motor runs normally leaves a drain and a full flush where it stands.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Many newer diesels on the roads around Walkleywood and Nailsworth carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the fumes to clean it, from its own tank.

Separate tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what cap to use.

The mistake grows in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank happens in Walkleywood

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Rockness Hill, or at Britannia Inn on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar vehicles come next, as well. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and once the tip begins, nothing stops it.

Millbottom or the middle of Walkleywood: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Shortwood or a forecourt around Walkleywood, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Trust the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Stroud.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — wherever you are in Gloucestershire — a routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Pike Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've located the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Discover during the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That's where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Walkleywood: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Shell, BP or another — the staff will normally help roll the car clear, if you ask.

If you're on your own driveway in Walkleywood, leave it where it stands.

When your engine has been run by now, pull over somewhere safe then turn the car off.

The next exit means where to come off if you are on the M5, under 10 miles from Walkleywood.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Walkleywood is less work than a trip of under 15 miles towards Gloucester, and so say.

## What occurs when our engineers arrive around Walkleywood

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it outside Nailsworth Church of England Primary School, beside Christ Church or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because the answers decide both work and price.

That quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once your tank is drained.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more here than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The motor is started next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before we go.

With pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor has not run need about half an hour after we arrive.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.

Moving the vehicle is not needed.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of Nailsworth Town Hall.
