# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Walrow

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your engine has not turned, it's drained and fully purged where your car sits in Walrow.

Here before the event? In that case the rest explains how it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many newer diesels in Hackness, as well as Walrow, run on two fluids; your engine gets just the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

Every tank comes with a filler of its own.

Under one flap, side by side: that's the arrangement on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Walrow: how it takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Pillmore Lane, or outside Bristol Bridge Inn on the way home after work.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old motor — because a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

Lastly, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as readily, and once the tip starts, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Walrow or out in Watchfield.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Bason Bridge or a forecourt in Walrow, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by position.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of motors mark which goes in which inlet just there.

- Cannot find it beside your diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Highbridge & Burnham.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Wherever across Somerset the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Barley Street on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip gently through the own spout.

- Close the cap, then check again — making sure your diesel cap remained shut the whole time. After that, start the car.

Find at the second or third stage that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Do not go on to step five.

## Walrow: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start the engine: that is where the short order of things begins.

On plenty of diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch the vehicle on.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

The staff at Asda, Bunscome Garage or another forecourt will normally help to push the car clear if asked.

On your own drive in Walrow? So your car remains put.

When the motor has been run already, stop somewhere safe and turn it off.

Walrow sits under a mile from the M5; on it, take the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Wells, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Walrow.

## What occurs when our technicians turn up in Walrow

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Churchfield Church School, close to Oak Tree Arena or on your own drive.

Our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, because the replies determine this work and our price.

The quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before leaving, our technicians fire it up and confirm that it is running correctly.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## Walrow and Somerset: AdBlue drains across the area

Walrow is a coastal area, and our teams that cover it also work the places around it, Highbridge and Edithmead among them, across the TA postcode area.

Fastest of all: quote a TA9 4 postcode to our van.

There's no need to move your car.

Anywhere it stands — near Rich's Cider Farm, on a lay-by heading to Frank Foley Park, at home — that's where it is drained.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Watchfield Hall? Close to a border? Asking is better than guessing, and so ring.

## In short, for Walrow drivers

Before you tip, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway, leave it off then ring 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel drains it where it sits, anywhere across Somerset.
