# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Walton Court: How It Happens and How to Stop It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor has not run, it's drained and thoroughly cleaned where your vehicle is around Walton Court.

Here in advance? In that case the rest covers how it comes about and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Not one fluid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels near Walton Court and Lower Hartwell carry, with diesel for the engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust stream and cleans it.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Much less regularly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Walton Court

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things lining up together.

Haste follows from the warning. The car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a driveway off Cornbrook Road, or on the way home in the car park outside Bugle Horn.

New-to-you cars are next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars put their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Walton Court or out in Southcourt.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Walton or a forecourt in Walton Court.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If the filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Aylesbury, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever in Buckinghamshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Swale Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the name "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew it. It seems daft. It works.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where the two sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and check again — making sure the diesel filler stayed shut throughout. Only then, start your car.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop right there.

Don't carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Walton Court?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Esso, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the vehicle away when asked.

If you are on your own driveway in Walton Court, leave the vehicle where it sits.

When the motor has run by now, pull over somewhere safe then switch it off.

On the M40, under 15 miles from Walton Court, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Walton Court is smaller a job than a run of under 25 miles to Milton Keynes, and so say.

## What occurs when our technicians turn up around Walton Court

By Ashmead Combined School, near Kingdom Hall or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

The answers decide the work and our price, so we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

No one heads out until you have heard our price over the phone.

Then the tank is cleared and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

After that we start it and check it runs smoothly before we leave.

If your motor hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Your insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
