# Walton-le-Dale: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Around Walton-le-Dale, catching it before the engine runs normally leaves draining and a thorough flush where it stands.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels on the roads around Walton-le-Dale and Bamber Bridge carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; a lot more have the two side by side behind one flap.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, again and again.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Walton-le-Dale

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Oakwood Avenue before work, or in the car park at Sir Robert Peel on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's a second factor: a new motor.

Lastly, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and after the pour begins, no part halts it.

Whether it happens in Holland Slack or the middle of Walton-le-Dale, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Tardy Gate or a forecourt around Walton-le-Dale, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually do not.

- On plenty of vehicles, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it lives if the filler is not next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you collect a rental or company car — from Bamber Bridge's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the warning comes on — wherever you are in Lancashire — a routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Hennel Lane.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- The two behind one flap? Then confirm the cap on the diesel filler is still closed ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Step five stays off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Walton-le-Dale?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting the engine.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on many diesels switching it on alone runs your fuel pump.

Thinning it with extra diesel won't work, since AdBlue sinks to the base rather than mixing — and that is where the fuel is sucked from.

On a forecourt — BP, Shell or any other — the staff will usually help roll your car away, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Walton-le-Dale.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M6 — under 3 miles out of Walton-le-Dale — at the next junction.

A short hop across Walton-le-Dale is a smaller job than a run towards Preston, under 3 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers get there in Walton-le-Dale

Our van comes to your car anywhere it stopped — your own driveway, near Vue, or outside Walton-le-Dale, St Leonard's Church of England Primary School.

Our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, since the answers settle the work and the price.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of the vehicle.

Before leaving, we start it and confirm that it's running properly.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once the job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
