# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Water: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Leave your motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

A drain and a thorough flush, done right where your vehicle sits in Water, is usually what it needs if found before the motor runs.

The remainder of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — useful if you're reading before it has happened.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many newer diesels around Whitewell Bottom, like those in Water, carry on two fluids; the engine takes only your diesel.

Your exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs around Water

It is seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out altogether, your vehicle drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Dean Lane before work, or in the car park at The Commercial on the way home.

New-to-you motors are next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and once the pour starts, nothing halts it.

Whether it happens in Forest Holme or the middle of Water, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A few seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Shaw Clough or a forecourt around Water.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Many cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Burnley Manchester Road? Check with the person who drove the car last before you set off, not once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

When the light comes on, wherever across Lancashire, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, motor off, and not rushed beside Burnley Road East on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, but it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, confirm it's closed before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look again that your diesel cap never came off.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Water?

Short order, then. Top of it: the engine remains off.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help roll the car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the Texaco or anywhere else.

At home in Water? So your car remains put.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M65 — under 5 miles out of Water — at the first exit.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Manchester, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Water.

## Our arrival around Water, and what happens next

Outside Water Primary School, close to Grime Bridge Colliery or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

What fluid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: we ask because those answers decide both work and quote.

You get that price by phone, before anybody sets off.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, once your tank is cleared.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing washes away unaided, however long it sits.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your vehicle.

Next we fire it up and make sure it runs properly before we go.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run need roughly half an hour after we are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains about Water, and Lancashire beyond

As a village, Water shares its vans nearby areas — Bank Top, Lumb — all the way through BB postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Our van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting BB4 9.

The car stays where it is.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to Compton's Cross, a lay-by on the way to Lumb Millenium Green, a drive.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Whitewell Bottom Community Centre, ring and ask rather than assuming.

## The short version for Water motorists

Pour nothing till you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Lancashire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103.
