# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Waterloo: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case put this page aside for now, keep your ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a thorough flush, carried out just where your car stands around Waterloo, is usually what it takes when found before your motor runs.

Here before the event? In that case the rest covers why it comes about and what to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your motor — but many modern diesels driven about Waterloo and Stuston hold a second fluid too.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the gas to fresh it, from its own tank.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on every filling station visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less frequently.

It is in that gap that the mistake happens.

## Waterloo: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a drive off Diss Road before work, or in the car park at The Crossways Inn heading home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Waterloo or out in Scole.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Frenze or a forecourt in Waterloo.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says which it lives if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Diss? Ask whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Norfolk that is.

- Stop somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of The Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once your tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently using the own spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find during the second or third stage that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Never go on to step five.

## Waterloo: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Brief list, then. First: your motor stays off.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the BP or the Gulf Oil, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the petrol pump.

Your own drive around Waterloo is the place it stays.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction is where to leave when you are on the M11, under 50 miles from Waterloo.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Waterloo is smaller a job than a run of under 25 miles to Norwich, so tell us.

## When our engineers turn up around Waterloo, what happens?

Outside Scole Church of England Primary Academy, close to Scole Village Sign or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since the replies determine the work and our quote.

Nobody sets off until you've had the price by phone.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

A test comes at the end: before that, clean diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

The engine is fired up next and tested to make sure it runs correctly, all before our technicians go.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is fine on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

Paying is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## AdBlue drains in Waterloo and across Norfolk

Waterloo is a village, and the teams that cover it also work the towns near it, Scole Common and Billingford among them, across the IP postcode area.

Quote a postcode beginning IP21 4, and the van arrives quickest.

Shifting the car isn't needed.

Wherever it stands — near Saint Andrew's Church, in a lay-by heading to Scole Pocket Park, on a drive — that's where it is emptied.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Dragon? By a county line? Checking beats guessing, and so ring.

## The short version for Waterloo people

Read the cap before you tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Norfolk, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank anyway — and so leave the vehicle off and call 0333 366 0103.
