# Waterloo: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Stop here for a moment when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when the engine hasn't run, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle is in Waterloo.

Here in advance? Then the rest explains how it comes about and how to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Many current diesels on the roads round Waterloo and Burton Ferry carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Many of cars have a single flap for the two, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on each filling station call-out, again and again.

Much less often, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

It is in the gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Waterloo: how it happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Eastern Avenue, or on the way home in the car park at First and Last.

Then, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old vehicle — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

It's seconds, whether in Llanion or bang in the centre of Waterloo.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Burton or a forecourt in Waterloo, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually doesn't. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- Many motors give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap often shows which fuel goes where, on many motors. Look for it.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel inlet? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Pembroke Dock.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

Wherever across Pembrokeshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Pull in somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Warrior Way.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you've found the filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Shut the cap, then check again — confirm the diesel filler stayed closed the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Stage five is off limits.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Waterloo already?

Brief order, then. First: your motor remains unstarted.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of the tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Tesco, Asda or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing your car clear if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway in Waterloo.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

Come off the M4 — under 50 miles out of Waterloo — at the first junction.

A short hop across Waterloo is a smaller job than a run towards St Davids, under 25 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## Waterloo: what happens when our engineers get there

Wherever the vehicle came to rest, whether by the local primary school, near Pembroke Dock Library or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

What liquid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: we ask because the replies set the work and quote.

No one sets off until you've had our price by phone.

Then your tank is drained and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a test of the vehicle.

We do not go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Using pumps safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine has not run take roughly half an hour after we arrive.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

## About Waterloo and where it is

Waterloo is a small coastal suburban area in Pembrokeshire, situated near the historic town of Pembroke Dock. Waterloo sits at a low elevation of around 4 metres, close to the shores of the Haven waterway. Waterloo is part of a larger network of residential communities, including nearby Llanion and Pembroke Dock, and is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing.

## AdBlue drains around Waterloo, and Pembrokeshire beyond

Being a residential suburb, Waterloo has the same vans as surrounding places — Pembroke Ferry, Pembroke Dock — right through SA postcodes and the surrounding area around them.

Quickest of all: quote a SA72 4 postcode for our van.

Shifting your car isn't necessary.

The drain takes place right there, whether a drive, a road by St. Govan's Shopping Centre, or a layby on the way to King's Wood.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Compass? By a border? Asking is better than assuming, and so ring.

## The short version for Waterloo motorists

Always, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, anywhere in Pembrokeshire, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank all the same — and so leave the vehicle off then ring 0333 366 0103.
