# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Watermoor

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Unlike fuel, it neither burns nor mixes, and nothing starts until your motor sucks it through.

Caught before the engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Watermoor.

Before anything, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Watermoor: AdBlue in the diesel tank

Do these:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Which fluid, and roughly what quantity? Hang on to the bottle or the till receipt, and our engineers will know.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting GL7 1, or the name of the closest street, brings our van to you without a search.

Things not to do:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll the vehicle: the engine remains off.

- Many diesels run their fuel pump the instant your ignition comes on, and so leave it off.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel will not thin it.

- Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short distance up Victoria Road.

- Do not try to drain the vehicle yourself by the roadside.

Rolling the vehicle off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Watermoor forecourt you are on, the Esso included.

Parked on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

Nothing inside a fuel pump is made for this liquid — and none of that was intended to travel that way.

It doesn't blend. After it is poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of the tank, and that's exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Easiest of all: one that had AdBlue in The Beeches overnight and has not turned since. The AdBlue waits at the foot of your tank, untouched — but it will be the first thing through once your engine starts, before any diesel at all.

Two kinds of harm come from there.

It eats at some metals used in fuel components, working on whatever it reaches until it is removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea forms crystals that clog filters and settle in narrow passages.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, leaving it overnight around Watermoor makes things worse. In your tank alone, time costs nothing.

The water in it causes harm of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors depend on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is regularly more serious than petrol

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Tesco, and this problem is thinned fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's in your tank it does no harm; the harm comes from running your engine on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

It does not burn, and so it can't simply be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, since it separates again — and the following tankful will not rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush counts for more with AdBlue, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Watermoor or out in Chesterton, costs more than almost any other mistake.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Anywhere around Gloucestershire the car has come to rest, an unrun engine means the AdBlue still in the reservoir: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank around Watermoor?

In dim light, two caps side by side — the AdBlue one and the diesel one, now and then under a single flap — can look the same. No one intends it; plenty of layouts allow it.

Mostly it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Cirencester Primary School the top-up is hurried.

Near Prospect Place, someone tips a container in on the drive in the evening.

Otherwise, after dark outside Cheeky Swine @ The Bees Knees, your vehicle is refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Wherever in Gloucestershire, Watermoor included, the mistake does not change, and nor does the first response: leave it switched off.

## Watermoor: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then your tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It has been pulled through your filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Expect lumpy running, exhaust smoke, falling power, lights on the dash, or a stall — returning from City Bank Local Nature Reserve, perhaps, or part way across Watermoor.

Stop when safe. Turn off. Keep it off rather than testing it again.

Each start pulls more of that through.

If you were on the M4, under 15 miles from Watermoor, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

Hopping across Watermoor to the car park by Hare Sculpture is one matter; driving for Gloucester, under 25 miles away, is another, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance matters.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

There's more to flush once the engine has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop.

Noticed soon, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Watermoor?

Anywhere it has stopped around Watermoor — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a street by Holy Trinity Church — the van travels to your vehicle.

Three replies decide the job, and so first our technicians ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, and if the motor has run.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after that tank is emptied, right there.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash away by itself, so the whole system gets a careful flush, which counts far more with urea than with petrol.

Next, the filter: flushed, or replaced when it has to be. After that fresh diesel, then a test of the vehicle.

Not run? In that case expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a live forecourt safe to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that's the last step.

You set off as soon as we have fired it up, and it makes no difference whether the car is on a driveway in Watermoor or in a bay at Kemble.

The check before our engineers head off is that it runs smoothly on new diesel.

No garage is needed at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both at the end.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Watermoor is a residential suburb, and a mobile drain suits it: whether the vehicle is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, we drain it where it sits, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out in Watermoor?

Because the jobs vary, a flat figure would not be honest.

Three things change the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue got in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight gap behind The Parish Hall.

What went in, what quantity, and whether it ran: each Watermoor call begins by asking precisely that, ahead of a figure, never afterwards.

Their replies narrow the range right down to one figure.

Before anyone heads out, you are told our price by phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## In Watermoor and still alongside the vehicle?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, right now, the most useful thing you can do.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Tell us it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. After that Petrol in Diesel takes over, across Watermoor or wherever within Gloucestershire.
