# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Waterside? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition stays off and so does the motor.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

The trouble begins once it's pulled through the lines — it will not ignite, and it won't blend with diesel.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully rinsed where the vehicle stands around Waterside.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Waterside, AdBlue in the diesel tank: what to do straight away

Do:

- Remove your keys, which prevents someone turning the power on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the product and the quantity, so do not bin it out.

- Give us a postcode starting AB42 1, or whatever street lies closest, and our van reaches you directly — so ring from wherever you stand.

Do not do these:

- No starting the engine — not for a second, not to shift your vehicle.

- Turning your key to ignition by itself sets your pump running on many diesels. Avoid it.

- No extra fuel on top. The AdBlue won't mix, so it's pointless.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, including a short distance up Douglas Crescent.

- No emptying it yourself, either, on the roadside.

The attendants working at any Waterside forecourt — the Asda among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave it exactly where it stands.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your engine.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into the exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. Once it's tipped into the tank, AdBlue acts nothing like fuel.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and pools underneath it — the same spot the intake sucks from.

Simplest of all: one that had AdBlue in Middle Grange overnight and has not turned since. The liquid waits at the base of that tank, undrawn — but it will be the first thing through if your motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

It does two kinds of harm from there.

What is left once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they lodge in tiny passages and clog filters. On top of that, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on till it's cleared out.

A car left sitting around Waterside with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Water protects nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running through them, so the water content damages them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Fill a diesel with petrol in error over at the Morrisons, and the problem is thinned fuel.

No harm comes while it sits unused, blended into your diesel — only once your motor runs on it.

The issue with AdBlue in a diesel is a totally wrong liquid.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Deposits and corrosion stay through the next fill, and AdBlue separates again from the diesel, so thinning it can't work. Hence the flush matters more, and turning the key "to see" does more harm here than nearly any other slip — in Inverugie or the centre of Waterside equally.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Never started? Then the AdBlue waits just in that tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to empty, wherever your car has stopped across Aberdeenshire.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Waterside?

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue inlet beside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

Usually it is never the filling station: someone picks up a container driving home and tips it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways account for most cases.

The refill gets rushed outside the local primary school, after your dash lit up with a warning while the children were dropped off.

In the evening, a container is tipped in on a drive close to James Stott Road.

Else, after dark by Grange Inn, your vehicle is topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It crops up the most in a hire car, a new motor, a fleet motor, or the other vehicle of a family with one of each fuel types — the cars drivers use the least.

Wherever in Aberdeenshire, Waterside included, the mistake doesn't change, and neither does the first step: leave it switched off.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in your diesel tank around Waterside?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running — on to the injection pump and every injector: that is how far it travels.

Perhaps coming back from New Course, or midway across Waterside, your engine might run rough, smoke, drop power, flash your dash or cut out.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart it to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Waterside lies over 50 miles from the M90; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up somewhere safe rather than carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system. That is why a hop across Waterside to park beside Gearge Birnie Memorial Bridge and a drive of under 50 miles towards Aberdeen are such separate jobs.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to rinse out once your engine has run, and we do all of it where the car has come to a stop.

When it is spotted soon, long-term damage is very unusual.

## Clearing AdBlue in a diesel around Waterside: what it takes

Anywhere it has stopped around Waterside — a filling station, a lay-by, a driveway, a street by Brinie Bridge Memorial — the van comes to your car.

Which fluid was put in, roughly how much, and if the engine has been run: our engineers ask first, since those decide the job.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave together when your tank is emptied, on the spot.

The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is flushed — or replaced, if it needs to be — and then the vehicle is tested.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they run quiet enough to spare the street at night.

Priming your system with new diesel comes at the end.

Whether it is a parking space by the nearest station or a driveway in Waterside, that is where our engineers start the engine and you head off.

It is tested on new diesel to be sure it runs properly before our technicians head off.

Because the job is done in full where the vehicle is, a workshop never comes into it.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers ask for.

## Waterside and Aberdeenshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Over the AB postcode area, the teams answering AdBlue jobs in Waterside serve much of Aberdeenshire as well, Coplandhill, Blackhouse and Hallmoss among them.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

Wherever your car stands — your driveway at home, a side street, a parking area, a filling station — we drain it there, with no need to bring it to us; that suits Waterside, a residential suburb, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Waterside

No single figure could be honest, since every job differs.

Whether the engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what changes the price. How much AdBlue was put in comes next, and then the location of your car, because an open driveway is easier for a technician to get to safely than a tight spot behind Inverugie Castle.

Before a figure, never afterwards, every enquiry from Waterside opens with three checks: the liquid, the quantity, and whether the engine ran.

Given them, the range shrinks to a single fixed number.

Before anyone sets off, you are told the price by phone. Then you pay on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we're on the way.

## Waterside: still next to your car?

Leaving your vehicle alone is, right now, the best thing open to you.
