# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Watledge: Why It Happens

Pause here a minute when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Watledge.

Here before the event? In that case the rest covers how it comes about and how to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

No single fluid but two: that's how plenty of newer diesels around Watledge and Pinfarthings carry, with diesel feeding the motor.

Your exhaust, not your engine, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

There's a filler for every tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

Far less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Watledge: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off Fairview Close before work, or in the car park at Village Inn on the way home.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: a new car.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip begins, no part stops it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Watledge or out in Egypt.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a drive in Windsoredge or a forecourt in Watledge.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it is in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park at Stroud? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever you are in Gloucestershire — a simple routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Station Road, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park and switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, perhaps, yet it does the trick.

- The two behind one flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel filler stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip slowly through the own spout.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Step five stays off limits.

## Watledge: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

Don't start the engine: that is how the short order of things starts.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition goes on — and so leave it off.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

The attendants at Shell, BP or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push the car clear if asked.

If you're on your own driveway in Watledge, leave the vehicle where it is.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M5 — under 10 miles out of Watledge — at the first junction.

A short hop across Watledge is a smaller job than a run towards Gloucester, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Watledge, and what occurs next

Our van reaches the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Nailsworth Youth Club, or outside Nailsworth Church of England Primary School.

Which liquid got in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our technicians ask since the answers set the work and price.

That quote comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Then that tank is drained and the fuel system cleaned thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the engine has not run take roughly half an hour once our technicians arrive.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork your insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains across Gloucestershire, Watledge included

As a residential suburb, Watledge shares its vans surrounding areas — Nailsworth, Forest Green — all the way across GL postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Give a postcode beginning GL6 0, and our van gets there quickest.

No need to shift the vehicle.

The drain happens on the spot, be it a driveway, a street near Nailsworth Library, or a layby towards Dunkirk Mill Ponds.

Ring and ask rather than guessing if you are close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe, like the back of St George's Church.

## Watledge motorists: the short version

Tip no AdBlue until you've read the cap.

Still AdBlue in your diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can drain it wherever it stands, wherever around Gloucestershire: keep it off then call 0333 366 0103.
