# Why It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Wattisfield

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page aside a moment, leave your ignition and motor off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where the vehicle stands around Wattisfield, is usually what it takes if caught before your motor runs.

The rest of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you're reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel goes to the engine — but plenty of current diesels driven about Wattisfield and Cranmer Green hold another fluid as well.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

There is a filler on every tank.

Plenty of vehicles share a single flap for the two, whereas some put the AdBlue filler to the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Wattisfield: how it takes place

Rarely is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, maybe before work off Church Green Lane, or outside the pub in the village on the way home after work.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after begun, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Wattisfield or out in Bobby Hill.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Hinderclay or a forecourt in Wattisfield, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones are often blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- On many cars, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Check inside the fuel flap: plenty of motors carry a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by the diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you pick up a hire car or company car — at Elmswell's car park, perhaps — not when the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around Suffolk, use this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of The Oaks, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems daft. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Discover at the second or third step that AdBlue went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Do not go on to step five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Wattisfield?

Short order, then. First: the engine remains off.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

The attendants at Shell, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually lend a hand pushing the vehicle away when you ask.

If you're on your own driveway around Wattisfield, leave it where it sits.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

The next exit means where to come off when you are on the M11, under 50 miles from Wattisfield.

A short hop across Wattisfield is a smaller job than a run towards Norwich, under 50 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when we turn up in Wattisfield

Wherever your car has stopped, be it by Walsham-le-Willows Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, near St Margaret's Church or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Those replies decide the work and the price, so our engineers ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it's run.

Nobody heads out before you've had the quote by phone.

Then your tank is drained and your system purged thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

After the fuel filter has been flushed — or renewed, where required — clean diesel goes in, and finally the vehicle gets tested.

Next we start the car and check it runs properly before we leave.

Using pumps fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the engine has not run need about half an hour after our technicians are there.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

## AdBlue drains in Wattisfield and across Suffolk

Wattisfield is a village, and the vans that cover it also work the towns near it, Hepworth and Walsham le Willows among them, across the IP postcode area.

Quote a postcode that starts IP22 1, and the van gets there quickest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street near Wattisfield Village Sign, a lay-by on the way to Wattisfield Community Garden, a drive.

Assuming won't help at the back of Wattisfield Village Hall, close to a boundary, or anywhere hard to pin down; phone and ask.
